Its appeal lies in the friction between hardboiled noir plotting, comic behavior and the particular community Lee claims to serve. Ethan Hawke makes that self-appointed truth-seeker compelling without making his motives seem uncomplicated.
What is The Lowdown about?
Created by Sterlin Harjo, the FX series stars Hawke as Lee Raybon, a citizen journalist and self-described Tulsa “truthstorian.” He works out of a rare-books store and investigates the city’s corruption and concealed histories. FX sums up the arrangement with its tagline: “He finds truth. Trouble finds him.”
The central case brings Lee up against the powerful Washberg family after its black sheep, Dale, appears to die by suicide. The setup draws on familiar investigative-noir ingredients, but the Tulsa setting and the people around Lee keep the story from feeling like a mystery transplanted into an interchangeable city. The series was loosely inspired by Harjo’s experience with This Land Press and his late colleague, Oklahoma historian Lee Roy Chapman; it is not a retelling of real events.
Is it a comedy or a noir?
It is both, and the contrast is the point. The Guardian describes the series as a playful neo-noir, while Hulu categorizes it as crime, mystery, drama and comedy. Those labels capture the ingredients, but the show’s character-based humor is more useful to understand than any one genre tag: Lee’s swagger and impulsiveness can be funny even as his investigations lead into serious questions of power and responsibility.

The noir side comes through in the pursuit of hidden motives, the powerful family at the center of the mystery and the hardboiled literary lineage. Oklahoma crime writer Jim Thompson is a documented influence: Harjo and the writing team acknowledge his work, which also functions as a plot device. That makes Thompson’s hardboiled crime fiction a natural optional companion for viewers interested in the tradition behind the show, though no particular book is an official tie-in.
What makes Lee Raybon an interesting lead?
Lee’s commitment to exposing wrongdoing can look like courage, but his self-image as the person who sees through everyone else also invites skepticism. TIME’s reading of the show emphasizes that tension: is Lee serving his neighbors, or acting from a place of privilege and self-righteousness? The series’ moral interest comes partly from not treating those possibilities as mutually exclusive.

That question also shapes how the story handles place. The Guardian notes the significance of Harjo telling a story about a white protagonist while pushing against the familiar pattern of outsiders taking over Indigenous stories. Tulsa is more than noir scenery; Lee’s claims and choices have to be considered in relation to the community around him.
Who is in the cast?
Hawke plays Lee Raybon. FX identifies Tommy Lee Jones as Lee Raybon Senior, Lee’s estranged grifter father, and Betty Gilpin as Ginger, a public defender and fellow truth-seeker. Keith David is also among the cast. First-season reviews additionally identify performers including Kyle MacLachlan and Tim Blake Nelson as part of the ensemble.

The second season adds Jones and Gilpin. Their characters widen the series’ view of Lee’s personal and professional world rather than making his investigations a one-man exercise.
Where and when can you watch it?
The series is an FX production, and Hulu lists it as TV-MA. Availability and catalog details can vary by territory, so the platform listing does not establish access in every country.

If you want a crime series that pairs a mystery with an unruly lead and a strong sense of place, The Lowdown has a clear point of view. Its best review question is not simply whether Lee can uncover the truth, but whether his version of truth-seeking is useful to the people around him. Viewers looking for grim, straight-faced noir may find its comic streak a mismatch; those drawn to a locally rooted mystery with a protagonist worth arguing about may find that blend its strength.
