The episode’s final twist brings in a glowing figure Trelane calls “Dad.” Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman later confirmed that the story deliberately connects Trelane and Q, while leaving the precise nature and chronology of that relationship open.
Why Spock and Chapel are suddenly getting married
The Enterprise crew is preparing for the Federation Day Centennial after repairs following its encounter with the Gorn. Spock expects Christine Chapel to return from her fellowship, but she arrives with Dr. Roger Korby, now her romantic partner. Their reunion leaves Spock wishing that things between him and Chapel could have gone differently.
A mysterious figure appears outside the Enterprise and later turns up as a Vulcan bartender. After Spock expresses his wish, he wakes in a reality where he and Chapel are about to marry. Korby is initially the only one who recognizes that something is wrong. The wedding is not a natural change in events: it is a reality Trelane has constructed around Spock’s desire.
How Chapel breaks Trelane’s false reality
Korby persuades Spock that their world has been altered, and Spock gradually recovers his memories. At the wedding, he uses a Neruda poem associated with Korby and Chapel to help Chapel recognize the truth as well. Trelane’s control reaches beyond the ceremony: he manipulates the celebration and even transforms Korby into a dog.
#1 Best Overall
Once Chapel resists the wedding, Trelane becomes angry and threatens the assembled guests. His apparent power over the scene is interrupted by an arrival he cannot simply ignore.
Who is the space god at the end?
The disruptive wedding planner is Trelane, played by Rhys Darby. The episode’s official recap identifies him, and his explanation makes clear that he interfered after seeing Korby digging on Trelane’s homeworld. Trelane found Korby’s apparent perfection irritating and used his power to intervene in the relationship.

At the climax, a glowing green spectre appears. Trelane addresses the figure as “Dad.” The visitor scolds him, restores Korby to human form, and tells the crowd that Trelane is “only” 8,000 years old. That age is a line of in-story dialogue, not a real-world statistic. Trelane then frees the guests from the false reality, changes into a non-corporeal form, and leaves with his father.
Is Trelane Q’s son?
The episode presents the father-and-son language on screen, but it does not name the glowing figure as Q. Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman made the intended link explicit in a July 17, 2025 interview with TrekCore. Goldsman said, “Now, Trelane and Q are related.” He also described the relationship as more fluid than a straightforward human family tree: “You could even say Q and Trelane are the same being in different times. I mean, you can kind of go up and down with it, but ‘father’ and ‘son’ is kind of the easiest way to do it.”

So the reveal is meant to connect Trelane with Q, rather than leave their resemblance as an accidental fan theory. Goldsman’s qualification matters, though: the show has not reduced the Q Continuum’s nature to an ordinary parent-and-child relationship.
How the ending connects to The Original Series
Trelane first appeared in The Original Series episode “The Squire of Gothos.” The intervention by a powerful parental figure at the end of “Wedding Bell Blues” echoes that earlier story, and Goldsman’s comments confirm that Strange New Worlds is making a deliberate connection between Trelane and Q.
One continuity question remains unanswered: the available sources do not establish exactly where this encounter falls in relation to Trelane’s Original Series appearance, or why Spock’s later memory does not resolve the connection. GamesRadar raises the memory issue and discusses possible explanations, but those possibilities are speculation, not confirmed canon.
