The premiere of The Last of Us Season 2 is a restrained reintroduction: Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson years after the first season, but their relationship is strained. Its quieter pace gives the show room to establish what has changed between them and how Joel’s past still shadows the present. Whether that measured setup earns its time depends on how much weight you give the character work before the story accelerates.
What is going on between Joel and Ellie?
They share a home in Jackson, but the easy closeness that once defined their bond has given way to distance. The premiere makes that rupture its central concern rather than treating the pair as an unquestioned team. Joel’s interactions and what he chooses not to say help make the tension visible; the conflict is not simply a new obstacle to clear before the plot resumes.

The episode also gives Ellie a life among Jackson’s other residents. Her connections and experiences beyond Joel matter because they show that she is not defined solely by their relationship. That broader social world makes the estrangement feel like part of a changed life, not an isolated argument.
Is the premiere too slow?
The episode favors setup and character work over a fast run of major events. TechRadar characterized the installment as a safe reintroduction and a calm before later events; that is a critical reading of its pacing, not an objective measure of how much happens. The slower approach can feel like a delay if you want the season to move quickly, but it gives the show space to establish the emotional terms of Joel and Ellie’s conflict.

- Eine intensive, von starken Charakteren getragene Geschichte, durch das Erfolgsstudio Naughty Dog perfekt inszeniert
- Langerwartete Fortsetzung von "The Last of Us" kommt endlich auf PS4
- Dank modernster Motion-Capturing werden die Emotionen noch realistischer transportiert
- Unberechenbare Begegnungen mit Feinden durch das erstklassige KI-System
The key question is whether those scenes deepen the divide or merely announce it. The premiere’s strongest material connects the tension to behavior, silence, and the everyday rhythms of Jackson. That makes the setup more purposeful than a simple pause before action, even if viewers looking for immediate momentum may find the opening measured.
How does the episode change the game?
The premiere includes material created for the television adaptation. Co-showrunner Craig Mazin described additions absent from the game as part of the work of adapting the story, rather than as a requirement to reproduce the source scene by scene. That distinction matters: the useful question is not only whether a moment appeared in the game, but whether the show’s version develops character or gives the season a clearer shape.

One notable example is Joel’s therapy material. Mazin said the show could use it to situate a character within Jackson over multiple episodes and reveal both what Joel thinks his problem is and what he withholds from someone trying to help him. The scene’s value lies in that access to his self-understanding—and its limits—not simply in its novelty as show-created material. Jackson gives the premiere room to show ordinary relationships and routines alongside the strain between Joel and Ellie. That community context makes the settlement feel like more than a safe backdrop: it is where the characters have built lives, and where the consequences of Joel’s earlier actions can reach them. The episode therefore holds two pressures together—the possibility of a settled life and the danger attached to the past.

Does the slow setup pay off?
As an opening chapter, the episode is more interested in positioning the characters than delivering a decisive burst of plot. Its restrained pace is a trade-off: it postpones some momentum, but gives the season a chance to make the Joel–Ellie fracture and Jackson’s place in their lives matter before later events test them. If the series builds on that groundwork, the patience feels earned; the premiere itself is chiefly a promise of where the emotional story may go.
The official supplementary discussion is listed as HBO’s Episode 1 – “Future Days”, whose framing asks what is going on between Joel and Ellie. It offers another entry point for viewers interested in the premiere’s central relationship.
