Netflix’s This Is the Zodiac Speaking introduces testimony and family materials that were new to viewers, including the Seawater siblings’ account of an alleged confession by Arthur Leigh Allen. They support the family’s theory that Allen was the Zodiac Killer, but they do not establish that he was. Netflix says police publicly identified Allen as a suspect but never had enough evidence to charge him; an FBI overview from 2007 said the killer’s identity remained a mystery.
What the Netflix series presents as new evidence
Released on October 23, 2024, This Is the Zodiac Speaking is a three-part documentary centered on David and Connie Seawater’s childhood relationship with Allen. Netflix describes interviews, archival footage and accounts from people including local reporter Rita Williams, investigative reporter Robert Graysmith, Allen’s former students and surviving friends of victims. The Seawaters say Allen took them on trips when they were children.

In the trailer, David says, “We realized we had been to all the murder sites before the murders.” That is his recollection, not an independently established timeline. TIME’s October 23, 2024 account also describes home videos and letters from Allen shown in the series. The presence of footage or letters is distinct from what the siblings infer from them: the available accounts do not provide forensic authentication details or establish that the materials prove Allen committed a crime. Netflix’s series overview and TIME’s report describe the material and the family’s claims.
What David and Connie Seawater say Allen told them
TIME reports that David Seawater said Allen called him in 1992 and confessed to drugging the children and molesting Connie. David said he then asked Allen whether he was the Zodiac, and Allen admitted that he was. This is David’s account of a conversation, as reported in connection with the documentary; it is not an independently verified confession or an official finding.

Connie recalls a separate, earlier exchange: she says she asked Allen whether he was the Zodiac and he replied that he would kill her if he told her. She understood the remark as a joke at the time. Neither sibling’s recollection should be conflated with a confession documented or confirmed by law enforcement.
What the letters say—and what they do not prove
After their mother died, the siblings found letters from Allen, according to TIME. The report quotes lines excerpted in the series: “Every time someone mentioned police to me I’d jump,” “Seeing a murder headline would turn my palms sweaty,” and “the most dangerous thing is when I almost decided to confess.” These are words attributed to letters shown in the documentary, not an explicit, independently established confession to the Zodiac crimes. Their meaning depends on context and interpretation.

What is officially established about Allen’s status
Netflix says Allen was the only person police had publicly identified as a suspect in the Zodiac case, but investigators never found enough evidence to charge him. Being named as a suspect is not a conviction, and the lack of a charge is not, by itself, a conclusive finding that he was cleared.
The FBI’s archived overview, dated March 2, 2007, described the Zodiac Killer’s identity as a mystery and the murders as unsolved. It said the crimes did not fall under federal jurisdiction, so the FBI did not open its own investigation, although local agencies sought FBI help with handwriting, cryptanalysis and fingerprint work. That page documents the FBI’s position in 2007; it should not be read as a statement about every development since. The FBI’s archived Zodiac Killer overview provides that historical account.

TIME reports that at least five victims were killed between December 1968 and October 1969. It also notes an argument sometimes made about the timing of the killings: they stopped before Allen was arrested for child molestation in 1974. That timing is circumstantial, not proof of identity.
Why the Seawaters connect Allen to other crimes
The Seawaters believe Allen may also have been responsible for earlier killings, including the deaths of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards in 1963 and Cheri Jo Bates in 1966. TIME says the Domingos and Edwards killings are not officially linked to the Zodiac and describes the Bates case as unsolved. The family’s proposed connections should therefore be kept separate from officially established Zodiac-linked crimes.
