Stalag Luft III was a German-run prisoner-of-war camp for Allied airmen near Sagan, Lower Silesia—now Żagań, Poland. It opened in April 1942 and became notorious for the Great Escape, when 76 men got out through tunnel Harry on the night of 24–25 March 1944. Masters of the Air depicts the camp in Part Seven, but its story is broader than the series’ focus on the 100th Bomb Group.

Where was Stalag Luft III, and who was held there?

The camp opened in April 1942 at Sagan, about 80 miles southeast of Berlin. Sagan was the wartime German place name; the town is now Żagań, in modern Poland. Stalag Luft III was intended for air force prisoners and became the principal camp for British and American air force officers. The Royal Air Force’s history describes the facility as a Luftwaffe-run camp.

As Allied aircrew were captured in greater numbers than German authorities had expected, the camp expanded. The RAF account says its original two compounds held about 2,500 officers and non-commissioned officers; it later grew to six compounds, with about 10,000 officers and 300 orderlies. Air Force NCOs were evacuated in summer 1943 and thereafter had a separate history. The RAF’s camp history

What happened in the Great Escape?

The escape took place overnight on 24–25 March 1944. Prisoners used tunnel Harry to get beyond the camp’s perimeter. The National Archives records that 76 men escaped before the 77th was spotted and the escape was stopped. The National Archives’ account

Harry was the last of three planned tunnels—Tom, Dick and Harry. The escape depended on a broad, coordinated effort rather than a single tunnel-builder or daring individual: the RAF says more than 600 personnel dug tunnels and planned the operation over 15 months. The National Archives describes hundreds of prisoners contributing to disguises and forged identity papers, as well as preparing 4,000 maps. These figures describe the scale of preparation, not the number of men who escaped. RAF account; National Archives education resource

The escape’s deadly aftermath

Of the 76 who got out, 73 were recaptured. The National Archives says the Gestapo murdered 50 of them. Those responsible were later tried at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal. The distinctions matter: 76 escaped, 73 were recaptured, and 50 of those recaptured were killed. The National Archives’ account

An earlier escape from the camp

The March 1944 escape was not the only attempt. In October 1943, three prisoners hid inside a hollow vaulting horse made from Red Cross boxes. The horse was carried into the exercise yard, allowing them to escape from the compound. The episode became known as the Wooden Horse escape. The National Archives’ account

How did Stalag Luft III’s story end?

As Soviet forces advanced, the camp was evacuated on 27 January 1945. This was part of a much larger forced movement of Allied prisoners west. The National Archives says that more than 80,000 Allied POWs were forced west between January and April 1945, across Poland, Czechoslovakia and Germany in harsh winter conditions. It puts the total held in German camps at 257,000. The National Archives on the long marches

What does Masters of the Air show about the camp?

Apple describes Masters of the Air as a drama based on Donald L. Miller’s book, following the men of the 100th Bomb Group, the “Bloody Hundredth.” Its official episode guide says Part Seven follows prisoners at Stalag Luft III trying to connect with the outside world; Part Nine describes POWs being marched across Germany as the war concludes. Apple TV Press; Apple TV episode guide

The series is an entry point to the camp’s history, not a complete account of its multi-year life or of every prisoner there. Its official premise centers on the 100th Bomb Group, while the real camp held a much broader population of Allied airmen. The available official descriptions establish the series’ focus and which episodes cover the camp and the marches; they do not provide a scene-by-scene historical accuracy assessment.
