Spoilers for Season 3, Episode 4, “The Road to the Spear.” Rand’s visions in Rhuidean reveal that the Aiel’s warrior identity grew out of a divided history: their ancestors once followed the Way of the Leaf, and some descendants kept that pacifist path while others took up the spear. The final vision links Mierin—the woman who becomes Lanfear—to the catastrophe that releases the Dark One. Moiraine’s visions, meanwhile, show possible futures rather than one guaranteed fate.
What does Rand see in the glass columns?
In Rhuidean, the glass columns take Rand through ancestral memories. The sequence moves backward from the Aiel War toward older eras, ultimately reaching the Age of Legends. These are not merely historical scenes: they trace the lives and choices that shaped the people Rand belongs to. As TheWrap’s episode analysis explains, the clan chiefs use the columns to encounter their ancestors and learn the concealed origins of the Aiel. (TheWrap)
The memories also make Rand’s own family history part of that larger account. His biological parents are Tigraine and Janduin; Tam raises him after he is found as an infant. The visions connect that immediate family line to the Aiel War and then to centuries of change in Aiel society. Rand is seeing both where he came from and how a people’s past became obscured. (TheWrap)
Were the Aiel and the Tinkers once the same people?
The episode’s answer is that both descend from a people devoted to the Way of the Leaf. In the ancient past, those ancestors carried out an Aes Sedai mission and were committed to nonviolence. Over time, some abandoned that way and became the spear-carrying Aiel; others maintained the pacifist tradition that survives among the Tinkers, also called the Tuatha’an. (The Escapist; Wotseries)

That shared origin changes how the Aiel’s warrior culture reads. It was not an inevitable trait from the beginning, but the outcome of a rupture in a community with a different calling. The episode describes the warrior Aiel as oathbreakers because their forebears left the pacifist code behind. The Tinkers preserve the other inheritance of that split. (The Escapist)
Who is Mierin, and what does the final vision mean?
The last ancestral vision follows Charn and Mierin. Mierin is the woman who later becomes known as Lanfear. She believes she has discovered a new power and is conducting research into it. The vision connects that experiment to the catastrophe that cracks the sky and frees the Dark One. (The Escapist; Wotseries)

Charn’s perspective places that world-changing event beside the people and family life surrounding it. The reveal gives Lanfear a direct connection to the origins of the central catastrophe, but it does not make her research the only history the episode tells: Rand’s visions also show how the Aiel’s identity emerged across generations.
Are Moiraine’s visions definite predictions?
No. Moiraine’s experience in Rhuidean presents multiple possible futures. Some show Lanfear killing her; others show Moiraine killing Rand. The visions are warnings about risks and choices, not confirmation that one outcome must happen. They leave Moiraine facing uncertainty rather than handing her a fixed prophecy. (The Escapist)
How does the episode relate to the books?
The Rhuidean material draws on Robert Jordan’s The Shadow Rising. The episode’s television story can be understood on its own: Rand’s ancestry illuminates the Aiel’s origin, and the final vision ties Mierin’s experiment to the catastrophe. For a book comparison, focus on which ancestors and historical periods the show depicts, how it presents the glass columns, how directly it explains the Aiel and Tinker connection, and how it frames Moiraine’s possible futures. Avoid treating a difference in the adaptation as a fact about the novel. (Wotseries)
