Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6, “In the Name of the Father.” Episode 6 ends when a masked, heavily armed mob reaches the Black Spot. The mob’s attack and the fire are depicted in Episode 7, not completed in Episode 6. The episode also reveals why Ingrid Kersh calls herself Periwinkle—and why her belief that Pennywise is her father is a tragic mistake.
What happens at the Black Spot in Episode 6?
The Black Spot is a clubhouse and juke joint on the Army base, associated with the base’s Black airmen. Charlotte has hidden Hank Grogan there, bringing the search for Hank to the club just as hostility in Derry is building. The episode shifts between that danger and a gathering inside: the children and adults join the airmen, and music and dancing begin.
Outside, local men form a vigilante mob after learning where Hank is being hidden. Episode 6 closes with the masked, armed men arriving at the Black Spot. HBO Max’s Season 1, Episode 6 listing sums up the looming violence: “A vigilante attack on the Black Spot unleashes long dormant forces.” That synopsis describes the episode’s threat, but the scene itself ends on the mob’s arrival.
Does the attack happen in Episode 6 or Episode 7?
Episode 6 sets up the attack and ends on its cliffhanger. Episode 7, titled “The Black Spot,” depicts the mob storming the club and setting it alight. Keeping that boundary clear matters: the fire sequence and its consequences belong to the following episode, not Episode 6’s ending.

Who is Periwinkle, and is Ingrid Kersh Pennywise’s daughter?
Ingrid Kersh is a Juniper Hill orderly and the daughter of Bob Gray, a circus performer who appeared as Pennywise. As a child, Ingrid wanted to perform alongside her father under the name Periwinkle. After the carnival left Derry, she stayed behind and later came to believe that the Pennywise figure she encountered was Bob returned to her.
That is Ingrid’s belief, not the episode’s confirmation that her human father has come back. The entity takes up Bob’s clown identity and performance, exploiting Ingrid’s grief and longing. She dresses as Periwinkle and feeds it children in the hope of reuniting with her father; the episode frames this as a tragic misrecognition, with Ingrid opening the door to a predatory being rather than recovering Bob Gray.

How does the series change Stephen King’s Black Spot story?
The series draws on the Black Spot interlude in Stephen King’s It, but it does not simply reproduce the book’s scene. In the novel, the Black Spot is a gathering place for Black enlisted men, and the Maine Legion of White Decency destroys it in an explicitly racist attack. A.V. Club contrasts that direct depiction with the series’ more implicit racial framing. TV Insider describes the later episode as an adaptation of the interlude and reports that the creators planned the Black Spot as a major catastrophic event.
| What to compare | King’s novel | The series |
|---|---|---|
| Timing and structure | The Black Spot attack is part of the novel’s history. | Episode 6 ends with the mob’s arrival; Episode 7 depicts the attack. |
| Racial framing | The arson is explicitly attributed to the Maine Legion of White Decency. | A.V. Club characterizes the show’s racial framing as more implicit. |
| Ingrid’s role | The novel’s Black Spot interlude does not include the series’ Ingrid, Bob Gray, and Periwinkle storyline. | The added Ingrid plot ties her mistaken hope of reunion to Pennywise’s manipulation. |
The show therefore connects the Black Spot catastrophe to its season-long plot and Ingrid’s personal story, rather than presenting the interlude as an exact recreation of King’s account.
