Superman (2025) set the record for the biggest global opening weekend of a solo Superman film, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company reported a $220 million worldwide debut. That is a meaningful launch for DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran, but it is not an all-time Warner Bros. box-office record—and one opening weekend does not prove a broader studio turnaround.
What record did the new Superman movie break?
Warner Bros. Discovery said in its August 7, 2025 shareholder letter that Superman generated $220 million globally in its opening weekend, calling it the strongest-ever debut for a solo Superman film and the strongest DC Studios global opening since 2022. The record is specifically about a solo Superman film’s global opening; it is not a claim that the movie set an all-time Warner Bros. record. Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter 2025 shareholder letter is the source for the company’s characterization.

How much did Superman make at the box office?
Box Office Mojo listed the film’s worldwide theatrical gross as $618,723,803 when checked on October 8, 2026. Its tracker split that total into $354,223,803 domestic and $264,500,000 international. These figures can be revised as box-office records are updated, so they are best read as a dated tracker snapshot, not an immutable final accounting. Box Office Mojo’s title page lists the reported totals.
Opening weekend: estimate versus later reported figure
The domestic opening figure depends on when it was reported. On July 13, 2025, the Associated Press reported the Sunday studio estimate of $122 million in the United States and Canada, alongside $95 million from 78 international markets. Box Office Mojo and The Numbers later listed the domestic opening at $125,021,735. The estimate and later-listed figure refer to different reporting stages; they should not be presented as contradictory totals for the same finalized report.

The Associated Press report also quoted Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeffrey Goldstein: “We needed to get the trust of the fanbase, and we didn’t have it. They were clear to us that we needed to take a step back and reinvent ourselves.” That describes the studio’s stated challenge and strategy; it does not establish that the opening itself restored audience trust. The Associated Press report gives the contemporaneous estimates and Goldstein’s remarks.
What the IMAX figure adds
IMAX Corporation said the film earned $30.4 million globally in IMAX theaters during its opening, including $19.1 million in North America. IMAX said that North American amount represented 15.6% of the domestic debut and was its highest market share for a film opening above $100 million domestically. This is IMAX’s own reported performance claim, rather than an independent measure of the whole theatrical market. IMAX’s announcement states those figures.
Does the box office prove a new era for Warner Bros.?
The “new era” language refers to DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran, not to Warner Bros. as a whole. The film was written and directed by Gunn and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. In its shareholder letter, Warner Bros. Discovery said, “Superman marked the beginning of a new era for DC Studios, extending our strong creative momentum into the third quarter.” That is the company’s framing of the release, not an independent verdict on a lasting change in the studio’s fortunes.
The same letter said Warner Bros. Studios had distributed five consecutive films that opened above $45 million domestically. That is also a company-reported slate claim, distinct from the solo-Superman global-opening record. A strong launch can signal substantial opening-weekend interest, but it cannot by itself show that the wider Warner Bros. business has turned around or establish why audiences chose to see the film.

Does the gross mean Superman was profitable?
No profitability conclusion follows from gross receipts alone. Box Office Mojo listed a $225 million production budget, but comparing that budget with the $618,723,803 worldwide gross is not a complete profit calculation. The figures do not account for the full costs and revenue arrangements needed to determine what the film ultimately earned for its studio and partners. The available box-office totals therefore establish theatrical scale, not net profit.
