Rodge, the singer behind “Daddy Cop,” is also Celina Juarez’s love interest on The Rookie. The connection grew from a comic song aimed at Officer John Nolan; actor Lisseth Chavez offered a playful theory that Celina was drawn to Rodge’s voice and the catchy tune, while making clear it was her assumption rather than a definitive explanation from the show.
Who sings “Daddy Cop” on The Rookie?
Rodge, played by Zander Hawley, is the lead singer of the garage band behind “Daddy Cop.” The song is about John Nolan, and its teasing portrayal makes Rodge a musical irritant to Nolan as well as a memorable figure in the officers’ orbit. How did Rodge become Celina’s love interest?
The song’s connection to Nolan brought Rodge into the story, but the romantic link is between Rodge and Celina Juarez. Asked about Celina dating him, Chavez said she imagined Celina was first attracted to Rodge’s voice and the song’s catchiness. In her words: “I think she fell in love with the voice first, I’m assuming, and [the] really catchy song.”
That is Chavez’s interpretation, not a confirmed account of a fully shown courtship or a stated explanation from the series’ writers. Her phrasing—“I’m assuming”—is important: it presents the voice-and-song idea as a plausible, funny way to understand Celina’s attraction, not as established canon. Why does Nolan dislike the song?
“Daddy Cop” is a joke at Nolan’s expense, so the comedy comes from the contrast between Rodge’s catchy performance and Nolan’s discomfort with being its subject. That gag gives Rodge a comic connection to Nolan; Celina’s attraction gives him a separate, romantic connection to her. The two story elements meet in the same character, but one does not mean Celina’s relationship is simply an extension of Nolan’s feud with the song.
What is the latest confirmed relationship context?
In a later Parade interview about Season 8, showrunner Alexi Hawley described Celina as being in a relationship with Rodge and teased that a potential new love interest could complicate matters. That confirms the relationship was being treated as active at the time of that interview, but it does not establish their status in every subsequent episode.
