What does the ending of Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 mean?
The closing montage is a deliberate bridge to later installments. In a May 19, 2024 interview with the Associated Press, Costner said he built a “montage of what’s coming” into the films. That makes continuation—not closure—the ending’s main function: it gestures toward stories and conflicts still to unfold, without confirming how each character’s arc ultimately ends. Costner also described the forces driving migration west. He said settlers were drawn by promotional claims about land, remarking, “There are salesmen in every century, every decade selling something they don’t really know what it is.” For Indigenous people, he said, the recurring influx of settlers and the violence accompanying it were difficult to make sense of. He called the American story “this giant experiment of hope.” Those are Costner’s thematic observations, not a substitute for a complete historical account.
How does the ending set up Chapter 2?
Chapter 2 carries forward the first film’s broad, intersecting view of the nineteenth-century West rather than narrowing the story to Hayes Ellison alone. The Venice Film Festival’s official synopsis describes a New Mexico Territory river settlement through its birth, death and rebirth, viewed across communities and competing interests.

Does Chapter 2 provide a definitive ending to the saga?
The montage and the film’s announced scope point to further chapters, not a promise that Chapter 2 resolves the entire saga. In a 2024 interview, CBS reported that Costner had completed the first two installments and was filming the third at that time. That is a dated production update, not confirmation of the saga’s current production status or of what later chapters will conclude. CBS News interview.

What happened to Chapter 2’s planned U.S. theatrical release?
New Line Cinema withdrew Chapter 2’s planned August 16, 2024 U.S. theatrical launch. In July 2024, the studio said it wanted audiences to have more time to discover Chapter 1, including through premium video on demand and Max. ABC News reported Chapter 1’s opening-weekend gross as $11.1 million, attributing the figure to The Numbers; it is an opening-weekend figure, not a measure of the ending’s effect or audience interpretation.
