TVLine reported that host Nick Cannon told viewers she was “under the weather” and expected back for the finale. The promo omission prompted questions, but the available reporting does not connect her absence to backlash over Nicole Scherzinger.
What happened with Rita Ora and the semi-finals?
Confusion began when a semi-finals promotional clip circulated without Ora. A December 10, 2024, ScreenRant article reproduced by IMDb noted her absence from the clip and described speculation about the reason. A missing face in a promo, however, did not establish who would appear in the episode.
Ora was also absent when the semi-finals aired on December 11. Parade’s recap described a three-person panel: Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg and Ken Jeong. Parade reported that Season 12 had been recorded in spring 2024, so the broadcast and the earlier filming took place at different times.
What explanation did the show give on air?
TVLine reported that Cannon announced near the start of the semi-finals that Ora was “under the weather” and said he expected her back for the following week’s finale. That is the reported explanation for her episode absence. The exact wording is TVLine’s account of the announcement; no independently verified transcript is established here.

The reports do not establish that illness caused the promo to be edited or explain why Ora was left out of that clip. The promotional omission and the on-air absence are related events, but one does not prove the cause of the other.
Was Nicole Scherzinger backlash behind Ora’s absence?
No causal link is established in the available reporting. TheWrap reported in 2023 that Scherzinger’s commitments to Sunset Boulevard overlapped with Season 11 filming, and that Ora filled in for her. That earlier scheduling context is separate from Ora’s absence during the Season 12 semi-finals.

Online discussion about Scherzinger’s earlier absence and the panel change may help explain why some viewers connected the subjects. But an individual Reddit comment from November 18, 2024, is not evidence of broad audience reaction, and the reviewed coverage does not show that backlash caused FOX to remove Ora or omit her from the promo.
