The Numbers lists Red One’s production budget at $200 million and its worldwide theatrical gross at $186,000,759. Those figures show the film’s ticket sales were about 0.9 times its listed production budget—but that is not a profit calculation. Theaters keep part of ticket revenue, and marketing, distribution, financing, and streaming value also affect the studio’s result.
How much did Red One make at the box office?
The Numbers records $97,000,759 in domestic ticket sales and $89 million internationally, for a worldwide theatrical gross of $186,000,759. These are database figures, not an audited statement of the film’s profit or loss. A Forbes report citing The Numbers gives a slightly different final worldwide total of $185,694,850; using The Numbers consistently, the total is $186,000,759. The Numbers’ Red One financial page lists a November 15, 2024 wide U.S. release and a December 12 Prime Video release.
Opening-weekend totals also vary by source and reporting point. The Associated Press reported $34.1 million in North America, while The Numbers’ weekend table lists $32,106,112. Those figures should be kept attributed rather than combined. The Associated Press report described the opening as a $34.1 million weekend.
What was Red One’s budget?
The Numbers lists a $200 million production budget. The Associated Press described the budget as more than $200 million and noted that some estimates were closer to $250 million. The higher figure is a reported estimate, not a settled replacement for The Numbers’ listing; calculations based on the film’s budget therefore depend on which figure is used. AP’s November 2024 report discusses the higher estimates, while The Numbers lists $200 million.

How much would Red One need to make to break even?
A common theatrical rule of thumb is that a major studio film may need a worldwide box-office gross of about 2.5 times its production budget to break even in theaters. Variety attributes the heuristic to theatrical economics, including cinemas retaining roughly half of ticket revenue. It is an estimate, not a universal formula or an official Amazon MGM target.
| Budget used | Illustrative theatrical break-even estimate | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| $200 million, as listed by The Numbers | About $500 million worldwide | $200 million × 2.5 |
| About $250 million, an estimate reported by AP | About $625 million worldwide | $250 million × 2.5 |
Against those rough benchmarks, the $186,000,759 worldwide gross listed by The Numbers falls short. That comparison does not establish the film’s actual net result: the studio does not receive every dollar of box-office gross, and the complete costs and revenues are not public. Variety’s account of the 2.5-times rule and Amazon MGM’s approach is available in its November 2024 report.

Why the box-office comparison does not settle whether Amazon MGM made money
The theatrical rule of thumb does not account for every title-specific cost or revenue. Actual exhibitor shares vary, and marketing, distribution, financing, incentives, and later revenue streams can change the economics. Variety says marketing and distribution costs for films of this kind can run around $100 million; that is not a verified Red One marketing bill.
Amazon MGM has also described theatrical releases as part of a broader streaming lifecycle. Distribution chief Kevin Wilson told Variety that if a theatrical release can cover print and advertising costs, it can create a large marketing campaign before a film reaches streaming. That explains why a studio might value a theatrical run beyond ticket revenue alone; it does not show how much streaming value Red One generated. Public reporting does not provide the film’s complete title-level accounting or an audited net profit or loss.
