Maestro is a music-obsessed villain played by Jinkx Monsoon in Doctor Who. In “The Devil’s Chord,” they believe all music belongs to them and pursue control of the world—and eventually the universe. The official character profile identifies the Toymaker as Maestro’s father; beyond that, the franchise has not established a detailed family history or a full catalogue of Maestro’s powers.
Who is Maestro in Doctor Who?
Maestro is a malevolently musical character played by Jinkx Monsoon. Their first regular appearance is in the episode “The Devil’s Chord,” according to the official Doctor Who character profile. Maestro’s defining claim is simple: “I. Am. Music.” The profile describes them as believing that all music belongs to them.
Maestro is not merely a performer or a villain with a musical theme. Music is central to their identity, their appetite and their ambitions. The official profile says they especially favor unwritten, or “natural,” music and consume it at a much higher rate.
What is Maestro’s plan?
The confirmed outline is a plan for ownership and control. Maestro follows in their father’s footsteps, seeking control of the world and, later, the universe. Their belief that all music belongs to them gives that ambition a specifically musical dimension: music is something to possess, not simply enjoy.

The available official descriptions establish the broad motive, but not a detailed mechanism for how Maestro intends to take control. It is more accurate to describe the plan in those terms than to infer a larger scheme or add plot details beyond what the profile says.
What are Maestro’s powers?
The official profile establishes an unusual relationship with music: Maestro is particularly drawn to unwritten or natural music and consumes it avidly. It does not provide an exhaustive list of abilities or spell out precise limits.

Monsoon described Maestro in the official interview published May 10, 2024 as “exceptionally powerful,” adding, “When human rules don’t apply to you you get to do whatever you want.” That is the actor’s description of the character, not a canonical power catalogue. It suggests how Monsoon approached Maestro’s freedom and threat, but it should not be mistaken for confirmation of specific abilities or that Maestro can do literally anything.
How is the Toymaker connected to Maestro?
The relationship is explicit: the official character profile identifies the Toymaker as Maestro’s father and says Maestro follows in their father’s footsteps. Monsoon’s interview also describes Maestro as “the first of the Toymaker’s legions.” Those statements establish a family connection and a link to the Toymaker’s larger group, but they do not lay out a detailed family history, hierarchy or comparison of their power.

The Toymaker’s history provides useful context. In the official Toymaker background article, the character’s debut is traced to the 1966 story The Celestial Toymaker, in which the Toymaker traps the First Doctor, Dodo and Steven in deadly games. That gives the Toymaker an established association with theatrical contests and control. Maestro’s profile, meanwhile, mentions puns and jokes alongside their own pursuit of control. Seeing a broader family resemblance in their theatricality is a reasonable interpretation, but the sources do not say their powers are equivalent.
Why did Jinkx Monsoon play Maestro?
Monsoon said Russell T Davies had them in mind after seeing their farcical stage show in Manchester. The show was set in a future version of Monsoon’s life and career, which helped Davies picture them in the role. Monsoon recalled the script’s description as “One part the Joker, one part Jinkx Monsoon.”

That combination of comic performance and menace suits a character whose intentions can be difficult to read. Monsoon explained the appeal of playing an unpredictable villain this way: “One of the scariest things about a villain is when you don’t know what they’re going to do next, when you have no way of reading them, when they’re smiling at you but they’re about to attack.”
