“The Pilot,” the first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, has an inviting horror premise but, in the TechYorker review, struggles to make its many characters and plot threads cohere. The result is an atmospheric but uneven opening: children investigate a disappearance and other strange events, yet the episode’s setup can feel diffuse rather than sharply focused.

What happens in “The Pilot”
The episode introduces children investigating a boy’s disappearance alongside unsettling phenomena in their community. Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis names Teddy, Phil, Lilly, and Ronnie as the young investigators; the BBFC record also describes a search prompted by a boy going missing. These are synopsis-level details, not a full account of the episode’s twists.
Why the premiere feels overcrowded
The central criticism in TechYorker’s review is that the premiere introduces too many characters without giving the audience a clear enough sense of whose story should lead. An ensemble can make a town feel populated and give a mystery several points of entry, but here the review finds that the competing introductions dilute momentum. Instead of one sharply defined emotional thread anchoring the horror, attention is spread across a broad setup.
That is an evaluative judgment about this episode, not an established consensus among viewers or critics. It also should not be confused with commentary about how the rest of the season develops: the question here is whether the pilot gives its characters and mystery enough focus to make its opening work on its own.

Atmosphere against narrative clarity
The premise offers room for the kind of slow-building unease a story about disappearances and strange events invites. The TechYorker assessment sees promise in that atmosphere, but finds that mood alone cannot compensate for an unfocused introduction. The episode needs its clues, character introductions, and scares to build a legible sense of direction; when those elements compete for attention, the opening can feel more like a collection of setups than a steadily tightening mystery.
How it fits into the IT story
Prime Video describes Welcome to Derry as based on Stephen King’s IT and as an expansion of the vision of the IT films. That connection supplies useful context, but the episode’s basic hook—a group of children investigating missing children and eerie events—is understandable without treating prior film knowledge as a prerequisite. Readers drawn to the source material can explore Stephen King’s IT novel; that is an optional route into the story, not a viewing requirement established by the available listings.

Verdict: a promising premise with a crowded introduction
“The Pilot” has a strong foundation in its child-led investigation and unsettling town, but the TechYorker review argues that too many introductions and a diffuse plot keep the premiere from landing with enough clarity. Its opening atmosphere may draw horror fans in; viewers looking for a tightly centered first episode may find the setup shaky.
