Spoilers for Outer Banks Season 4. Larissa Genrette was JJ Maybank’s biological mother. Chandler Groff was his biological father, while Luke Maybank raised him. Larissa died aboard the boat Albatross; Netflix’s Season 4 recap says Groff killed her. The story that Larissa and her infant drowned together concealed the truth: the baby survived and grew up to be JJ.
Who was Larissa Genrette?
Larissa was the daughter of Wes Genrette and the wife of Chandler Groff. She was also JJ’s biological mother, a fact JJ does not learn until Season 4. Groff is JJ’s biological father; Luke Maybank, rather than Groff, raised him.

How JJ discovers the truth
Wes leaves a letter addressed to “Master JJ Maybank” and tells him to ask Luke about “Albatross.” The clue leads JJ to confront Luke, who at first evades the question. Luke eventually explains that Albatross was the boat where Larissa died and tells JJ that she was his mother. His account also establishes Groff as JJ’s father.
A flashback in Part 2 adds context: Luke had worked for the Genrette household, and Larissa and Groff were JJ’s parents. The reveal makes JJ a Kook by birth, a contrast to the life he has lived with the Pogues. Co-creator Shannon Burke described the twist this way in Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 ending explainer: “That was the most extreme thing we could think of: That JJ’s actually a Kook.”

What happened to Larissa on the Albatross?
Larissa died aboard the Albatross, and Netflix’s Season 4 recap identifies Groff as the person who killed her. The recap establishes the location and killer but does not give a detailed account of how he killed her, so the mechanics of her death should not be inferred beyond what the show and recap state.
Why people believed JJ had died with her
The story circulating in town was that Larissa and her infant had died together in a rumored drowning. That account was false: the baby survived, and that child was JJ. Luke raised him after Groff left him in Luke’s care.

Who was Chandler Groff, and what was his motive?
The Netflix recap describes Groff as someone who grew up on the Cut, became a con man, used multiple identities and married Larissa. He confirms to JJ that he is his father in Episode 7. The same recap says Groff invented the curse story to distract Wes and the Pogues from the real treasure, the Blue Crown.
In Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer, Burke says Groff’s marriage to Larissa was not part of a long-term scheme. After living many lives, Groff realized there was something he could retrieve from his past and returned for the lens. Burke also says the creators had a more explicit backstory for Larissa’s murder in mind, but decided it was unnecessary to include at that point. That is creator commentary about the story’s construction, not an additional on-screen explanation of the killing.
