Michael Caine’s strongest heist and caper films range from a gold-job comedy to a later, more character-focused diamond theft. This ranking puts The Italian Job (1969) first, followed by Gambit (1966), Deadfall (1968), Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976), and Flawless (2007). The order is an editorial watchlist, not a settled critical consensus: it weighs how central the theft is to the story, each film’s distinctive hook, and the range of tones represented.
How this ranking treats heist movies
Heist films and capers overlap, but they are not always the same kind of crime story. The British Film Institute describes the caper as a comic heist subgenre, often built around a target, a plan, a specialist crew, and a complication. That definition makes room for both elaborate group jobs and lighter, con-driven plots. The films below are ranked by how strongly their theft or confidence scheme shapes the story, alongside their individual appeal—not by a common set of review scores.
The five best Michael Caine heist movies
1. The Italian Job (1969)
The essential Caine caper, and the clearest first choice. Peter Collinson’s film is a heist comedy built around a scheme to steal a gold shipment in Turin by creating a traffic jam. Its ensemble and Mini Cooper set pieces give the plan a scale and visual character that distinguish it from the more intimate schemes elsewhere on this list. The BFI calls it a cult caper as well as a heist comedy. BFI’s Michael Caine film guide and Caine’s official filmography describe the film and its premise.
2. Gambit (1966)
Gambit brings an earlier, con-oriented flavor to the list, shifting the focus from a large crew job toward a scheme of deception. Caine’s official filmography lists it among his films, but the available synopsis information does not establish enough plot detail to describe the mechanics of the plan more specifically. Its place here reflects its caper fit and its contrast with The Italian Job, rather than a claim that critics have ranked it above the remaining titles. Michael Caine’s official filmography

3. Deadfall (1968)

The theft premise gives it a more direct crime-story angle than the list’s bigger comic ensembles. Michael Caine’s official filmography
4. Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976)
For a broad comic bank-job premise, this film pairs Caine with a story about two outmatched con men attempting a major bank heist. Its ensemble-comedy approach offers a different kind of caper from the specialist crew and set pieces of The Italian Job. Michael Caine’s official filmography
