McGee’s unpublished novel helps the team investigate, while Parker’s visions of Lily remain part of a separate, unresolved story arc.
What happens in “Humbug”?
“Humbug” is the ninth episode of NCIS Season 22, aired December 16, 2024. CBS’s official premise says a shocking tell-all threatens to ruin Christmas for a decorated Marine, and the team must uncover the truth before the book reaches shelves. The episode runs 43 minutes, according to CBS’s listing.
The threat is bigger than one Marine’s reputation. In a December 16, 2024 interview with Parade, showrunner Steven D. Binder said excerpts from the forthcoming book Darkness at Dawn put the Marine’s career and pending legislation intended to aid veterans at risk. That broader consequence comes from Binder’s interview, rather than the CBS synopsis.
What are the episode’s central story beats?
The available episode guide and Binder’s interview establish these key elements, but do not verify a complete, ordered list of ten scenes. They are best read as the episode’s confirmed story threads, not as a ranked “ten biggest moments” recap.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The tell-all puts a Marine’s legacy at risk
The case centers on an upcoming book whose revelations could damage the standing of a decorated Marine. The question facing NCIS is whether the accusations tell the whole truth before the book’s release turns a celebrated legacy into a public crisis.
The stakes reach beyond one person
Binder said the book’s excerpts also threaten pending legislation that would help veterans. That makes the team’s search for the truth consequential for people beyond the Marine at the center of the story.

McGee’s fiction becomes a case-solving tool
McGee’s latest unpublished novel helps the team work through the case. Binder also said the episode revisits McGee’s pen name, Thom E. Gemcity. The novel is part of the fictional story; it is not a commercially available tie-in identified in the cited material.
The Christmas setting serves a story about forgiveness
Binder described the intended tone as a story about forgiveness, peace, and people supporting one another, with a heartwarming Christmas feeling. As he put it to Parade on December 16, 2024: “It’s not about Christmas, but it’s I would say the Christmas spirit.” That is the showrunner’s description of the creative intent, not a claim about how every viewer will respond.

Parker’s visions of Lily continue without a confirmed answer
Parker’s visions of Lily are part of the season’s ongoing mystery, separate from the Marine’s tell-all case. CBS’s listing for the preceding episode notes the visions; in a December 22 interview, Binder said the mystery would unfold gradually and ruled out the idea that Lily is Parker’s sister. The available information does not establish that “Humbug” solves who Lily is or why Parker sees her.
What does the episode settle—and what remains open?
“Humbug” brings together a time-sensitive investigation, a Marine’s reputation, and the possible effect of a tell-all on veteran-related legislation. McGee’s writing provides a connection to the case, while the holiday framing emphasizes forgiveness and mutual support. Parker’s Lily visions, by contrast, belong to a continuing character mystery; the available episode information does not confirm a resolution in this installment.
