Netflix’s three-part 2024 series The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping follows director Katherine Kubler, a former student at the Academy at Ivy Ridge, as she revisits the school and examines the troubled-teen industry. The series already covers Ivy Ridge and former students’ accounts; the eight points below are additional historical, legal and industry context—not a definitive list of facts the series omitted.
1. Ivy Ridge was marketed as a school, but its academic credentials became a separate controversy
The Academy at Ivy Ridge was marketed as a boarding school for teenagers with behavioral issues. That public-facing identity is distinct from the former students’ abuse allegations in the series. The Associated Press reported that a 2005 New York attorney general settlement addressed misrepresented academic credentials and unauthorized diplomas. According to the AP, 113 graduates received partial tuition refunds totaling more than $1 million.
The settlement is evidence of a credential dispute and a remedy for some graduates. It should not be treated as a court finding that every allegation described in the documentary was true, or as proof that every family received the same representations.
2. The school operated for a defined period near Ogdensburg
The Associated Press reported that Ivy Ridge operated from 2001 to 2009 near Ogdensburg, New York. That timeline helps distinguish the school’s documented history from later reports about other residential programs. It also means that accounts of what happened at Ivy Ridge should be tied to the school and period in question rather than generalized to every program using similar language.

3. Ivy Ridge was affiliated with a larger network
According to the Associated Press, Ivy Ridge was one of several institutions affiliated with the now-defunct World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASPS). The affiliation places the academy within a wider network of programs, but it does not establish that every affiliated institution operated identically or that allegations about Ivy Ridge apply to all of them.
4. The series is told through Kubler’s own history
Kubler attended Ivy Ridge, and the series uses her return and investigation as its organizing perspective. Netflix Tudum describes the project as a first-person investigation; a 2026 Tenth Circuit opinion also characterizes its framing as personal and advocacy-oriented. That perspective helps explain the series’ urgency and focus. It is not, by itself, a reason to dismiss former students’ accounts—or a substitute for evaluating individual claims against the available evidence.

The series is a documentary, not a judicial determination of every disputed event. The appellate opinion is relevant to the documentary’s framing and related litigation; it should not be read as proving or disproving the full story told on screen.
5. Complaints reported after the series streamed were not proof of criminal conduct
In an April 4, 2024 report, the Associated Press said St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua had received more than 50 complaints after the series became available. The AP reported that his office was assessing allegations with other law-enforcement offices. That figure is a count reported at that time, not a current total or a finding that crimes occurred.
Rank #3
Pasqua told the AP: “If there is something there that we can prosecute and we’re confident that the allegations are true, and then that’s what we’re going to do.” His distinction matters: receiving complaints, investigating them and establishing prosecutable evidence are different stages.
6. Time limits can complicate investigations, but the 2024 report is not a current case update
The AP’s April 2024 coverage described possible statute-of-limitations barriers raised in connection with the allegations. That was a contemporaneous caution, not a ruling on every possible claim or a definitive statement of the law as it applies to each person and incident.
Rank #4
The available reporting here does not establish the investigation’s status in October 2026. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the 2024 assessment as the present status or to claim a particular outcome without a newer official record.

Netflix Tudum reports that Kubler worries similar programs could reopen under new names, and that the series discusses proposed federal oversight. Those points convey the filmmaker’s concern and the policy discussion presented around the documentary; they are not a quantified estimate of how many programs exist or proof that a particular proposal became law.

Kubler urged viewers, in the March 2024 Tudum interview, to contact representatives about oversight and regulation. That was a call to action at the time of the interview, not a current update on the status of legislation.
8. A book helped shape the documentary project
Netflix Tudum says Maia Szalavitz’s Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled-Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids prompted Kubler to redouble her work on the documentary project. It offers a further reading route into the broader subject, but Tudum’s account of its influence does not make the book an official companion or independent proof of every claim in the series.
