Yes. The poisonous fruit named in The White Lotus season 3 is pong pong, from the real species Cerbera odollam. Kew lists the species as accepted and includes Thailand in its native range. Its seeds contain cardiac glycosides that can disrupt heart function; the show’s poisoning scene, however, should not be treated as a realistic guide to how exposure or recovery unfolds.
What is the poisonous fruit in The White Lotus?
In the season-three finale, hotel worker Pam warns the Ratliffs not to eat fruit from a pong pong tree. TIME reproduces her line: “That is the fruit of the mighty pong pong tree, and the seeds of the fruit are toxic.” That is dialogue from the show, not a botanical statement. The plant’s scientific name is Cerbera odollam, an accepted species in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’s Plants of the World Online. Kew gives its native range as southern India to the Pacific, including Thailand, so the species is plausible in the series’ setting. That does not identify a particular fictional tree or establish where a real scene was filmed.
Which part is poisonous?
Reporting by National Geographic identifies the seed or kernel as the central toxic part: cerberin is most concentrated there. That is not a basis for assuming that touching the tree or eating any amount of fruit flesh guarantees poisoning or death. The sources do not establish a predictable fatal dose.
How can pong pong poison affect the body?
Cerberin is a cardiac glycoside, a class of compounds that can interfere with normal heart function. National Geographic quotes Owen McDougal, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Boise State University, explaining that it can “override the polarization within the body that’s required for the heart muscle to contract and relax.” Reported effects include gastrointestinal symptoms and disturbances in heart rate and rhythm. TIME’s interviewed medical toxicologists also describe low heart rate, low blood pressure, and electrolyte effects. Severe poisoning can be fatal, but effects and outcomes vary.

As associate professor of forensic science Hilary Hamnett told National Geographic, “Like with any poison, it depends on the person—their age, their sex, their size, and whether they’ve got any existing illnesses.” The amount of toxin and individual circumstances matter; the reporting does not support a single outcome for every exposure.
What happens in the finale—and how realistic is it?
TIME’s finale recap says Timothy blends seeds into a smoothie, then stops Saxon from drinking it. Later, Lochlan uses the blender for a protein shake, becomes ill, and eventually wakes up. The sequence makes the blender the link between Timothy’s abandoned plan and Lochlan’s poisoning.

The quick collapse and recovery poolside compress a more variable medical course. TIME’s toxicology coverage reports that onset can vary and may take hours; the finale is not a dependable timeline or portrayal of treatment. If a real person may have ingested pong pong, seek emergency medical help immediately rather than waiting to see whether symptoms develop.

Reported figures describe particular places and periods, not today’s global risk. National Geographic summarizes a 2004 study as attributing about half of plant-poisoning cases and one tenth of all poisoning cases in Kerala, India, from 1989 to 1999 to pong pong. TIME reports more than 500 fatal pong pong poisonings in Kerala during that period in its summary of research led by Yvan Gaillard. These are different descriptions and should not be added together as though they measure the same thing.
