Manhunt Review: Apple TV+’s Drama Reimagines the Hunt for John Wilkes Booth

Apple TV+’s Manhunt reframes the pursuit of John Wilkes Booth as a Stanton-centered conspiracy thriller. The series draws on real events but also invents encounters, making it a drama rather than a documentary.

Manhunt turns the search for Abraham Lincoln’s assassin into a conspiracy thriller, with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton at the center and John Wilkes Booth cast as a volatile, unraveling fugitive. Its fresh angle is less a claim to reveal an unknown Booth than a shift in perspective: the story follows the people and politics surrounding the pursuit. The series is historical drama, not a documentary, and its most memorable choices include invented encounters as well as documented events.

What is Apple TV+’s Manhunt about?

Released in 2024, Manhunt is a historical drama and conspiracy thriller about the pursuit of Booth after Lincoln’s assassination. Apple describes it as based on James L. Swanson’s nonfiction book, Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer. Monica Beletsky created and showran the series; Tobias Menzies plays Stanton, Anthony Boyle plays Booth, Hamish Linklater plays Lincoln, and Lovie Simone plays Mary Simms. Apple’s U.S. catalog lists the series as TV-MA, with language and violence advisories; storefront details can vary by region. Apple’s series announcement called it a seven-part limited series. Its original schedule—two episodes on March 15, 2024, then weekly releases through April 19—is historical, not a current release calendar.

Why center the story on Edwin Stanton?

Rather than treat the manhunt as a sequence of clues leading only toward Booth, the series gives substantial weight to Stanton: his pursuit of the killer, his political responsibilities, and his grief after Lincoln’s death. Menzies described Stanton’s experience as involving “both a political loss and also a personal loss. He loses a friend,” in an interview reported by The Associated Press. That emotional framing gives the pursuit a second axis: the effort to capture Booth unfolds alongside the effort to hold a shaken government together.

This emphasis is a deliberate narrative choice, not a neutral historical summary. AARP’s March 2024 fact-check notes that making Stanton the key figure is a major departure from both Swanson’s book and history. The shift can make the show feel like a political thriller as much as a fugitive chase, though it also means viewers should not assume the series offers a comprehensive account of every person or event involved.

How does the series portray John Wilkes Booth?

Boyle’s Booth is presented as a dangerous, driven man whose flight becomes increasingly unstable. The series gives the assassin a dramatic presence rather than treating him as a distant name in a history lesson. Boyle told the AP that reading Booth’s letters was a “descent into madness”; that phrase describes the actor’s research and interpretation, not a clinical judgment or proof that every scene reflects the historical record.

Creator-showrunner Beletsky told the AP that “Most no one knows the details of this story unless they’ve done a Ph.D or it’s a special interest of theirs.” The show uses that relative unfamiliarity to make the pursuit suspenseful, but its dramatic force should not be confused with documentary authority.

How accurate is the Apple TV+ series Manhunt?

The broad historical frame is clear: Booth assassinated Lincoln five days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender effectively ended the Civil War. The plan also targeted Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward, but only the attack on Lincoln succeeded. Booth was found hiding in a barn 12 days later and was shot and killed, according to The Associated Press. Those events supply the pursuit’s historical stakes; they do not establish that each scene in the series is accurate.

A documented example of dramatic invention

One specific change concerns Mary Simms. The series depicts her interacting with Booth when he arrives at Dr. Samuel Mudd’s home. The AP reports that Simms never met Booth and that the show uses her as a composite figure, drawing on several people who helped convict Booth’s co-conspirators. The character’s dramatic function therefore combines a historical name with constructed material.

Series, book, and historical record

Swanson’s nonfiction book is the source identified by Apple, but an adaptation can reorganize events, combine people, and invent encounters to build a coherent drama. The Simms example makes that distinction concrete; the Stanton-centered emphasis is another meaningful departure identified by AARP. The available reporting does not provide a scene-by-scene audit, so a numerical accuracy score—or a blanket claim that the series is either faithful or unfaithful—would overstate what is established.

Is Manhunt worth watching?

For viewers drawn to the political aftermath of Lincoln’s assassination, Stanton’s central role gives the familiar story a useful perspective. For viewers expecting a documentary or a fully verified reconstruction, the series needs a different yardstick: it is a scripted adaptation of Swanson’s nonfiction account, and its dramatic inventions matter. The best way to approach it is as a tense historical thriller whose real events provide the framework and whose characters and encounters are shaped for television.

Rank #4

Readers wanting the nonfiction account behind the series can look for Swanson’s Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer, which Apple identifies as the adaptation’s source.
