In Captain America: Brave New World, Ruth Bat-Seraph remains Israeli, but Marvel changes the rest of her comic-book profile: she works for the U.S. government rather than Mossad and is a former member of the Red Room, the organization tied to the Black Widow mythology. The film does not call her Sabra on screen, according to a post-release review.
Who is Sabra in Marvel comics?
Ruth Bat-Seraph, known in the comics as Sabra, first appeared in Marvel comics in 1980, according to The Times of Israel and The National. Reporting describes the comics character as an Israeli superhero, Mossad agent and mutant with superpowers.
What changed in the film?
| Aspect | Comics portrayal | Captain America: Brave New World |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Ruth Bat-Seraph, also known as Sabra, as described by The Times of Israel. | Ruth Bat-Seraph; a post-release Jerusalem Post review says the film does not use the Sabra name. |
| Nationality | Israeli, according to The Times of Israel. | Israeli; producer Nate Moore described her as first-generation Israeli in an interview with The National. |
| Role or affiliation | Mossad agent, as described in The Times of Israel. | Works in the U.S. government under President Thaddeus Ross, according to Moore and the Jerusalem Post review. |
| Origin and powers | Mutant with superpowers, according to The Times of Israel. | No longer a mutant; reworked as a former Black Widow associated with the Red Room, Moore told The National. |
“Former Black Widow” refers to the fictional Red Room program in Marvel’s universe; it does not mean the film identifies Bat-Seraph as Natasha Romanoff. Moore summed up the distinction: “She’s Israeli, but she’s not Mossad. Now she works in the US government.”
Why did Marvel change Sabra?
Moore said the film retains something of the publishing character’s personality while giving her a different history: “The Ruth Bat-Seraph you meet in the film has very much, I would argue, the attitude of the character from publishing, but the backstory is different.” He described adapting comic characters for screen storytelling, rather than treating the source continuity as fixed.

Marvel had signaled a reimagining when it announced Shira Haas’s casting in 2022. The studio statement reproduced by TheWrap said the filmmakers were taking “a new approach” to Sabra, a character introduced in comics more than 40 years earlier.
How the question developed before release
In July 2024, a description of the upcoming film character as a former Black Widow and U.S. government official prompted questions about whether she would remain Israeli. TheWrap reported at the time, citing insiders, that she would; that was pre-release reporting, not confirmation from the finished film.

In February 2025, after the film’s release, Moore confirmed to The National that Bat-Seraph remained Israeli, was not Mossad, worked in the U.S. government and had been changed from a mutant to a Red Room-linked former Black Widow. A Jerusalem Post review also describes her as Israeli and as an adviser to Ross.

The casting and character announcement prompted public discussion about changing Sabra’s background and about including an Israeli character in a story connected to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. TheWrap and The Times of Israel reported on those reactions. The existence of that debate does not establish that political backlash caused Marvel’s adaptation choices; Moore discussed the altered backstory as part of adapting the character for the screen.
