The killer targeting Maxine’s friends and colleagues is Ernest Miller, her father—not Richard Ramirez, the real-life Night Stalker whose crimes form part of the film’s 1985 backdrop. Miller sees Maxine’s Hollywood and adult-film career as sinful, and plans to force her into a filmed spectacle of repentance. Maxine confronts and shoots him; the fame-filled closing sequence is better read as a fantasy or deliberately ambiguous image than as confirmed fact.
Who is the killer in MaXXXine?
The murderer behind the attacks on Maxine’s circle is Ernest Miller, Maxine’s father and a preacher. He is the leather-clad figure connected to the killings, and the reveal turns the threat from a seemingly anonymous Hollywood predator into a personal one. A spoiler analysis identifies Miller as the televangelist heard in X, the film that introduced Maxine as an adult-film performer. Knockout Horror’s spoiler analysis discusses the identity and plot mechanics.
Richard Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, is a separate, real-life killer in the film’s historical setting. The 1985 backdrop encourages the characters—and viewers—to interpret the danger through the lens of the crimes then dominating public attention. Ramirez is not the fictional killer responsible for targeting Maxine’s associates.
Why is Maxine’s father killing people?
Miller believes Maxine’s chosen life and the Hollywood film world are sinful. In his fanatic worldview, violence is bound up with an effort to punish and “save” her. That is his rationale, not an objective religious judgment the film asks viewers to accept.

- Follows Maxine, who was the only survivor of the bloody incidents of X, as she continues her journey towards fame to be an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.
The film’s setting helps explain why this conflict belongs in 1985. In a British Film Institute interview published July 5, 2024, director Ti West said the year brought together a real-life serial-killer backdrop and public moral outrage about music, movies, and censorship. He also described the trilogy as having become concerned with cinema’s effects on its characters. Those comments explain the period and the series’ direction; they are not a direct confirmation of Miller’s specific motive.
What is Miller’s plan?
Miller gets help locating Maxine, then targets people around her as he closes in. The sequence makes his violence a means of isolating and controlling her, not a separate spree aimed at solving the Night Stalker panic.

- Find Maxine: Miller hires private investigator John Labat to track her down.
- Cut her off: He kills people in her circle, putting her friends and colleagues in danger as he pursues her.
- Stage a forced “repentance”: He prepares to make Maxine take part in a filmed religious spectacle—an attempt to compel her submission under the guise of salvation.
The identity, motive, and plan are detailed in secondary spoiler analysis; they are not established by the official synopsis or a verified on-record explanation from West. Knockout Horror’s account describes Miller’s role and intended spectacle.
How does the confrontation end?
Maxine confronts Miller near the Hollywood sign and shoots him. That is the concrete resolution of the father-daughter conflict: she resists his attempt to control her and kills him.

What follows is less certain. The closing images show the recognition and career success Maxine wants, but Plot Explained’s ending analysis reads this sequence as her imagined future while leaving its status open. It should not be presented as proof that every detail of the red-carpet success literally happens.

A24’s official synopsis places Maxine Minx in 1980s Hollywood, where the adult-film star gets a chance at mainstream stardom while a mysterious killer stalks starlets and threatens to expose her past. The BFI film listing identifies her opportunity as a lead role in the slasher sequel The Puritan II. A24 presents MaXXXine as her Hollywood story, and the Directors Guild of America’s July 13, 2024 feature identifies it as the third installment after X and Pearl.
The earlier films make the Hollywood ambition feel like a continuation rather than a new direction: Maxine’s desire to become a star was already part of her story in X. In the final film, that ambition is tested by a killer who treats her career as evidence against her.
