The 2024 film has the ingredients of effective psychological horror; critics including The Guardian and Salon argue that its plotting and ending leave those ingredients underused.
What is Hold Your Breath about?
Set in 1930s Oklahoma, Karrie Crouse and Will Joines’s film follows Margaret, played by Sarah Paulson, as she tries to protect her family from a threat that may be more than the storms surrounding them. Searchlight Pictures describes a woman who believes a sinister presence is endangering her family. That premise keeps the source of danger unsettled: the family may face an outside menace, while Margaret’s own perceptions are becoming harder to trust.

The Dust Bowl is more than period decoration. Drought, isolation and dust pressing into the family’s shelter give the story a physical sense of confinement. Salon notes how the storms and accumulating dust contribute to that claustrophobic atmosphere. The setting makes the film’s central uncertainty—whether the danger is outside the home or taking shape in Margaret’s mind—feel like a natural source of dread.
Sarah Paulson is the film’s strongest reason to watch
Paulson anchors the film as a mother whose determination to protect her children is inseparable from her growing fear. The Guardian calls the movie an all-consuming showcase for her, and Salon says she commands attention even as the plot meanders. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus also singles out Paulson’s performance while criticizing the film’s shortage of incident and scares. Across those assessments, the acting is praised more consistently than the storytelling.
#1 Best Overall
Paulson described her interest in the role as a chance to play a mother in that historical period: “I was really interested in portraying a woman in that time-period and playing a mother,” she told Moviefone in an interview published October 2, 2024. Her description also points to the film’s intended mode of fear. In a Spectrum News interview published October 4, she called it “a horror of the mind” about “a woman doing everything she can to protect her children in extreme circumstances.”
Where the psychological horror loses momentum
Atmosphere builds more effectively than the plot
The storm-battered setting and family’s isolation establish an effective pressure cooker. The problem, according to the critical case made by Salon and The Guardian, is that the story does not develop its central uncertainty with equal force. Salon describes the plot as meandering into predictable territory; The Guardian praises the filmmaking and acting but says the film “falls apart by the end.” Those are critical judgments, but they identify the gap between a promising premise and a satisfying progression.

The scares and ending do not justify the wait
For psychological horror to sustain a slow build, uncertainty needs to deepen or pay off in a way that changes how the audience understands what came before. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus faults the film for too few incidents and scares, while the Guardian and Salon criticize the eventual payoff as underwhelming or predictable. The result, as reflected in those reviews, is a film that creates unease but does not convert it into a sufficiently compelling escalation or conclusion.
Is Hold Your Breath worth watching?
Watch it for Paulson’s performance and the oppressive Dust Bowl atmosphere, especially if you are interested in a restrained story about maternal fear and unstable perception. If you want horror with frequent scares or a plot that steadily sharpens its mystery into a forceful ending, the film may disappoint. The Guardian’s review captures the split: it is “impressively made and acted but falls apart by the end.”
