In the final episode, “The Stockholm Syndrome,” Sheldon and Amy receive the Nobel Prize in Physics, Leonard and Penny reveal they are expecting a baby, and Sheldon finally recognizes how much his friends have done for him. The story ends where the series began: with the group together at home.
Which episode is the series finale?
The finale aired on May 16, 2019, as a one-hour event made up of two episodes. “The Change Constant” is season 12, episode 23; “The Stockholm Syndrome” is episode 24 and the final installment. The first part resolves Sheldon and Amy’s Nobel news and shows the building’s elevator restored. After a two-month time jump, “The Stockholm Syndrome” follows the group to Stockholm for the award ceremony. CBS’s announcement presented the episodes as a two-part finale; the episode guide identifies the final episode and its setting.
What happens in “The Stockholm Syndrome”?
Leonard and Penny keep a secret
Before the trip, Leonard helps Sheldon rebuild a molecular model Sheldon had destroyed. Leonard and Penny are also concealing news from their friends: Penny is pregnant, but she is not ready to tell the group. On the flight to Stockholm, Penny feels nauseated. Sheldon assumes she is sick; Leonard’s frustration makes the reason clear, and the pregnancy becomes known to their friends.
Sheldon’s behavior strains the group
Sheldon’s self-centered behavior during the trip hurts the people around him and brings the group close to leaving before the ceremony. Amy tells him that his actions have hurt her, too. Her bluntness forces Sheldon to confront the effect he is having on the friends who have traveled to support him.

Amy speaks about girls in science; Sheldon thanks his friends
At the Nobel ceremony, Amy gives a sincere speech encouraging girls to pursue science. Sheldon sets aside the speech he prepared and instead thanks his family and friends, acknowledging that his achievement depended on their support. He names Raj, Bernadette, Howard, Penny, and Leonard, then repeats Leonard’s old prediction that his and Penny’s children would be “smart and beautiful.” Sheldon realizes they are expecting, inadvertently revealing the news before Penny has told her parents. He apologizes to his friends and tells them he loves them.
Where does the finale leave each character?
- Sheldon and Amy: They share the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. Sheldon publicly credits the people who helped him, while Amy uses her moment at the ceremony to encourage girls to enter science.
- Leonard and Penny: They are expecting a child. Sheldon’s speech connects the news to the pilot, when Leonard first predicted that their babies would be “smart and beautiful.” Executive producer Steve Holland said the pregnancy honored the relationship and that early line in his TV Guide interview.
- Raj: He sits beside Sarah Michelle Gellar on the flight and makes a new friend. The episode offers a moment of connection, not confirmation of a romantic future. Holland explained that the empty seat beside Raj suggested an opportunity for an interesting seatmate, and that Chuck Lorre proposed a fun guest appearance; the writers chose Gellar partly as a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference.
- Howard and Bernadette: They travel without their children together for the first time. Their conversation makes clear that the getaway they want is a chance to rest, rather than an elaborate romantic adventure.
Why does the ending return to the apartment?
The last scene brings the ensemble back to Apartment 4A, sharing food as the acoustic theme plays. Penny wears the same blue floral top she wore in the pilot, a visual callback noted in the episode guide. Rather than showing a montage of everyone’s distant future, the finale closes on the friendship and familiar routine that have held the group together.

The elevator is restored in “The Change Constant,” before the two-month jump; it is not repaired during “The Stockholm Syndrome.” Holland said the writers had long wanted to bring it back and moved its return earlier because the moment made emotional sense for Sheldon. In the interview, he recalled that the team had initially imagined the scene coming later in the finale, then reconsidered its placement while breaking the story.
