Full spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6, including the Gemini Killer reveal and Mia’s death.
Episode 6 turns Dexter’s apparent victory over the Gemini Killer into a trap: the man he kills is only one of two identical brothers. Meanwhile, Batista’s theory that Dexter shaped Harrison’s methods loses its most immediate test when Mia is found dead in custody. The twin twist is a pulpy cliffhanger; the episode’s more consequential tension lies in Dexter’s promise to stop making Harrison into a copy of himself.
What happens in Episode 6?
After seeing material about Gemini’s victims, Dexter becomes disgusted with Gareth and pursues him. Gareth tracks Dexter to his home, but Dexter plays on his ego, drugs his drink, and kills him. Dexter then tries to hide the body during Blessing’s visit. The scene presents the killing as a successful, if hurried, cleanup.
That apparent resolution lasts until Prater summons his circle for a helicopter outing. A man who looks exactly like Gareth arrives. Dexter realizes the identity he thought he had eliminated belongs to identical twin brothers, and he has to conceal his shock in front of the surviving twin.

Who is the second Gemini twin?
Episode 6 reveals that the Gemini Killer is not one man but a pair of identical brothers. Dexter kills Gareth, believing he has ended the threat, only for Gareth’s look-alike brother to appear at Prater’s rendezvous. The episode does not establish what the surviving twin knows about his brother’s death or whether Prater knows the brothers are twins.
The name “Gemini” points toward the reveal, and the killers’ paired-victim motif makes the partnership feel thematically prepared. But the episode withholds the literal answer until Dexter—and the audience—has reason to think the immediate danger is over. That makes the reversal effective as a cliffhanger, even if it leans into the show’s heightened, pulpy side. Dexter’s confidence is plausible because his plan appears to work; the twist is that he has misunderstood the identity of the person he was hunting.

Why is Batista pursuing Dexter?
Batista connects the Ryan Foster killing and its pattern to the Bay Harbor Butcher case. He suspects Dexter taught Harrison his methods, rather than viewing the younger man’s violence as an isolated development. That is an investigative theory, not a proven case in this episode.
Batista wants Mia to look at a photograph of Dexter as a way to test his theory. Before he can question her, she is found dead in custody. The episode’s recaps attribute her death to Prater’s prison connection. Her death removes Batista’s immediate opportunity to test the link, but Episode 6 does not resolve whether he can keep the broader case active.

Does the episode’s Dexter and Harrison story land?
The plot’s disguises and reversals are balanced by a quieter conflict between father and son. Harrison resists being defined by his violent impulses. Dexter promises to stop shaping him in Dexter’s image, offering a tentative alternative to the inheritance of violence that has shadowed their relationship.
That promise gives the episode more emotional weight than another tactical win for Dexter. He can manipulate Gareth and conceal his reaction to the twin, but he cannot settle what his example has done to Harrison with one assurance. The trust between them remains tentative, and the contrast between that fragile honesty and Dexter’s ongoing deception is the episode’s strongest counterpoint to its serial-killer mechanics.

Does the Gemini reveal earn its cliffhanger?
Mostly. The twin identity pays off the episode title and the paired-killing idea, while the timing turns Dexter’s apparent success into fresh danger without requiring the episode to pretend he made no effort to protect himself. It is an intentionally heightened surprise, not a subtle procedural deduction. The episode also leaves its most useful questions open rather than answering them prematurely:
- Does the surviving twin know Dexter killed his brother?
- Does Prater know the Gemini Killer identity is shared by twins?
- Can Batista sustain his investigation after Mia’s death?
Those are cliffhanger questions, not answers supplied by Episode 6. Their uncertainty is what makes the final reveal feel consequential: Dexter must keep his cover while a new threat, Batista’s investigation, and his promise to Harrison all remain unresolved.
