The available accounts do not show that the production malfunctioned nationwide.
Why did the anniversary special feel chaotic?
NBCUniversal scheduled SNL50: The Anniversary Special as a live three-hour broadcast on Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 8 to 11 p.m. Eastern on NBC and Peacock. NBCUniversal’s announcement described it as the culmination of the anniversary weekend.
The actual experience diverged from that plan in two ways. NPR critic Eric Deggans reported that the special stretched well past three hours and judged its pacing uneven: some sketches felt insidery, and some callbacks could have been shorter. That is one reviewer’s criticism of the show’s length and content, not evidence of a technical breakdown. Deggans’s review also praised standout moments and noted that viewers who enjoy familiar cast members and callbacks might find the reunion appealing.
Why was the ending cut off in Houston?
KPRC’s explanation describes a local scheduling mistake. In a statement published February 17, 2025, vice president and general manager Phil Lane said NBC had notified the station on Friday that the live broadcast would run long, with a scheduled end time of 10:15 p.m. KPRC had technical teams prepared for that planned 15-minute extension. When the show ran later still, station staff did not make the necessary real-time changes.
Lane said KPRC missed the final 13 minutes. He described the cutoff as “not an intentional programming decision” but “simply human error,” and added: “When the show ran even later, we didn’t make the real-time adjustments, and that’s why the final 13 minutes were missed.” KPRC’s statement attributed the interruption to the station’s handling of the overrun.
What viewers in Houston missed
The omitted ending included Paul McCartney performing an Abbey Road medley of “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” and “The End.” It also included a goodbye led by Martin Short, with cast members holding a photograph of Gilda Radner. Lane said KPRC was working with NBC on an encore presentation, but the cited account does not establish whether or where that replay is currently available.

Was there a nationwide broadcast failure?
The documented cutoff was specific to KPRC in Houston. Its statement explains what happened at that station; it does not establish that other NBC affiliates cut away or that the live production failed across the country. The program’s overrun and the Houston affiliate’s scheduling error help explain the chaotic impression, but they are distinct issues.
NBCUniversal reported 14.8 million viewers and a 2.53 rating among adults ages 18–49 across NBC and Peacock in live-plus-same-day viewing, along with 8.7 million social interactions. Those are the company’s reported figures for that measurement window, not final multi-day totals. NBCUniversal’s post-event figures do not establish how each local affiliate handled the ending.
