Spoilers for all of Netflix’s first season of Dept. Q. Merritt Lingard was alive: Lyle Jennings abducted her after killing the real Sam Haig and stealing his identity. He held her in a hyperbaric chamber for four years until Department Q found and rescued her. The ferry disappearance was a kidnapping, not a confirmed drowning.

What happened to Merritt Lingard?

Four years before Carl Morck’s cold-case unit reopened her file, solicitor Merritt Lingard disappeared while traveling by ferry with her disabled brother, William. The apparent explanation was that she had fallen or been pushed overboard, but no body was recovered. The investigation eventually revealed that she had been abducted and kept alive in captivity.

The official Netflix recap lays out the case’s central turns in its ending explanation.

Who kidnapped Merritt?

Lyle Jennings stole Sam Haig’s identity

The man Merritt knew as Sam Haig was actually Lyle Jennings. The real Haig was a journalist who had known Lyle at an institution for troubled boys. Lyle killed Haig, threw his body from a climbing spot, and assumed his identity. He then used that false identity to get close to Merritt before abducting her.

The bird clue pointed to the Jennings family

William’s drawing showed a man with a bird emblem. The investigation initially went down a false path by identifying the bird as a boobrie. It was a cormorant, which connected the image to the Jennings family’s shipping company, Shorebird Ocean Systems.

Why did Lyle target Merritt?

The kidnapping grew out of an earlier episode involving the Lingard siblings and the Jennings brothers. Merritt had helped plan an aborted robbery of her mother’s jewelry so she could escape the island. During that incident, Lyle—not his brother Harry—beat William so badly that he became nonverbal. Harry died trying to escape police, and Lyle and his mother blamed Merritt.

That history supplies the show’s backstory for Lyle’s actions, but it is not a simple one-step explanation. The episode ties the abduction to the robbery, William’s assault, Harry’s death, and the Jennings family’s blame toward Merritt.

What happened in the hyperbaric chamber?

Lyle kept Merritt in a hyperbaric chamber for four years, where she was held and tortured. Morck and Akram eventually found the Jennings property, but opening the chamber incorrectly could have put her in further danger. Hardy coached them by phone on how to handle the depressurization.

When Lyle arrived, Morck was shot in the shoulder while protecting Akram. Akram then defeated Lyle, and the police confronted Lyle’s mother. She fled and shot herself. Merritt was safely removed from the chamber and reunited with William.

Were Graham Finch and Stephen Burns involved?

No. Merritt had been the lead prosecutor in a case involving Graham Finch, and her superior, Stephen Burns, had pressured her not to call a witness. Those threads expose corruption and create plausible suspects, but Netflix’s recap says Finch and Burns did not cause Merritt’s disappearance. The kidnapping trail leads to Lyle and his stolen identity.

Did Merritt meet Carl Morck after her rescue?

They pass one another at police headquarters, but do not speak or share a reunion. Netflix’s recap describes the missed encounter without confirming whether either recognizes the other or what either feels. It can be read as a quiet, unsentimental closing beat; that is an interpretation of the staging, not a confirmed explanation from the show’s creators.

What remains unresolved at the end of season one?

Merritt’s kidnapping case is closed, but the separate shooting that opened the season is not fully solved. Morck has a theory about the attack, while Hardy is assigned to investigate the facts. Netflix announced on June 25, 2026, that Dept. Q would return for season two and that production had begun; the announcement did not give a release date. The series is an adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Department Q novels, though the official material cited here does not establish a one-to-one mapping between season one and a particular book. Netflix describes the adaptation in its series announcement, and shared the season-two update here.
