Tatum later said the project’s intended tone clashed with what Disney wanted after acquiring Fox. He described the proposed film as an R-rated romantic comedy; actor Lizzy Caplan, who recalled meeting with Tatum and the producers, called it a screwball romantic comedy. Those are recollections of the concept, not descriptions of a finished movie.
Why was Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie canceled?
Fox developed the solo film with Tatum attached to star. It remained in development for years, with several directors attached along the way. Tatum attributed the project’s collapse in part to the Fox acquisition: he said the kind of movie he and his collaborators wanted was far from what Disney wanted. GamesRadar+ reported his account of the tonal mismatch and the project’s director attachments.
That explanation is Tatum’s retrospective account, not proof that a single executive decision or any one director’s departure alone ended the film. The available reporting establishes a lengthy development history and multiple director attachments, but not a definitive chronology of every change or its cause.
What would the Gambit movie have been about?
The clearest evidence concerns the intended tone, not the plot. Tatum described the planned movie as an R-rated romantic comedy. Caplan, who said she met with Tatum and the producers during development, characterized it as a screwball romantic comedy. Her recollection supports the broad comedic and romantic approach, but does not confirm a role for her or establish what a final screenplay contained. ComicBook.com reported Caplan’s account; retrospective coverage of Tatum’s comments is also available from Yahoo News and TIME.

Was Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie ever made?
No. The Fox solo project never entered production, so there is no completed Tatum-led Gambit film to watch. Tatum later played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, a separate screen appearance that did not amount to production of the abandoned solo movie.

Is the Gambit movie coming back?
Tatum was also included as Gambit in a 2025 trade report about the announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday. That report concerns another later appearance, not a revival of the Fox solo film or confirmation that its script was reused. Variety Australia reported his inclusion in the announced cast. The available sources do not establish a revival of the solo project; a future status change would need confirmation from an official announcement.
