In March 2024, entertainment coverage described Timothée Chalamet as the first actor in more than four decades to star in two top-grossing domestic films within an eight-month span: Wonka and Dune: Part Two. The comparison was John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever and Grease. It is a reported box-office distinction, not a formally certified record with a stated adjudicator and methodology.
What is the reported record?
W Magazine described Chalamet’s films as the top two domestic-grossing movies over an eight-month span. The Associated Press later reported the pairing as two top-grossing films released within eight months of each other. Both accounts linked the comparison to Travolta, whose cited films were Saturday Night Fever and Grease. W Magazine’s March 18, 2024 report and the AP’s March 26, 2024 report frame this as a reported distinction, not an official record-book ruling.
Which films and figures are involved?
| Actor | Films in the comparison | What the figures measure |
|---|---|---|
| Timothée Chalamet | Wonka and Dune: Part Two | As of March 26, 2024, AP reported more than $632 million worldwide for Wonka and a $575.5 million running worldwide total for Dune: Part Two. These are dated figures, not current or necessarily final lifetime totals. |
| John Travolta | Saturday Night Fever and Grease | The comparison is cited in the coverage of Chalamet’s eight-month distinction; it should not be read as saying these were the two highest-grossing films of calendar year 1978. |
The reported Chalamet figures are worldwide totals, whereas W Magazine’s distinction is explicitly domestic. They illustrate the films’ commercial reach but do not independently establish the domestic ranking. AP’s dated totals should not be combined with a domestic ranking as though they measured the same market.
Why the wording matters
Domestic is not worldwide
In this context, “domestic” refers to the U.S. and Canadian box office, not the worldwide total. A film’s global gross cannot verify a domestic chart position. The claim should therefore be repeated with its domestic scope rather than broadened into a claim about the highest-grossing films everywhere.

An eight-month window is not a calendar year
A rolling span between releases, a calendar-year ranking, and a film’s cumulative lifetime gross answer different questions. Box Office Mojo’s 1978 domestic chart lists Grease at No. 1 and Saturday Night Fever at No. 7 in its 1978 gross column. The chart also gives cumulative totals, which differ from those annual grosses. That does not by itself disprove the reported eight-month comparison, but it does mean the claim should not be recast as Travolta starring in 1978’s two highest-grossing films.
Different box-office measures are not interchangeable
Annual gross, cumulative gross, opening weekend, and worldwide lifetime revenue are separate measures. A ranking is meaningful only when its geography, period, and gross measure are clear. The available reports do not identify an official record-keeping authority or a complete methodology for certifying this as a record.

How big was Dune: Part Two’s opening?
For context, AP reported on March 3, 2024, that Dune: Part Two opened to $81.5 million in North America and debuted with $178.5 million worldwide, citing studio estimates. Those are opening-weekend and global-debut figures, not the later running worldwide total. AP also noted a viral sandworm-inspired popcorn bucket tied to the film’s promotional campaign; that report does not establish that the collectible is currently available for purchase. AP’s March 3 opening-weekend report includes the estimates and promotional context.
