There is no official HBO ranking of its greatest series. This is an editorial list, weighing writing, performances, direction and production craft, originality, cultural influence, consistency, and staying power. Awards and audience figures help describe a show’s reception, but they are not a substitute for judgment. A comedy, a city-spanning crime drama, and a fantasy epic can excel in different ways while still being judged by those shared standards.

HBO’s official series catalog confirms the shows and premises below; it does not rank them. The order here reflects the strength of each series as a whole, not a claim that every season is equally consistent.

The 20 greatest HBO series, ranked

  1. Girls

Lena Dunham’s comedy-drama earns its place for turning the uncertainty and self-involvement of young adulthood into sharply observed character comedy. Its New York is not a glamorous backdrop so much as a place where ambition, money, friendship, and romantic disappointment collide. The characters can be frustrating by design; the show’s achievement is making that frustration part of its portrait rather than smoothing it away.

  2. Veep

Armando Iannucci’s political comedy runs on verbal precision and escalating humiliation. Julia Louis-Dreyfus anchors an ensemble that makes the machinery of political ambition funny without pretending its characters are wiser or kinder than they are. Its rapid-fire insults and tightly engineered farce reward close attention to both performance and writing.

  3. Deadwood

Set in a rough gold-rush settlement, Deadwood treats the Western as a story about how people build power and community amid violence. Its unusual, heightened dialogue, morally complicated characters, and lived-in production design give the town a vivid identity. The series was cut short, so its overall shape is less complete than that of the strongest finished runs on this list.

  4. Six Feet Under

Centered on a family-run funeral home, this drama makes mortality part of everyday life rather than a distant theme. Its shifting points of view and emotionally unsettled family relationships give its stories room for both dark humor and grief. The series is especially memorable for bringing those strands to a deliberate close.

  5. Boardwalk Empire

Prohibition-era Atlantic City supplies the setting for a crime drama of political deals, organized violence, and carefully staged period detail. Steve Buscemi leads a large cast through a world where public respectability and private criminality sit side by side. Its scale and craft are major strengths, though the broad ensemble makes its focus less concentrated than that of HBO’s most tightly shaped dramas.

  6. Watchmen

This limited series uses the language of superhero fiction to explore race, inherited violence, memory, and the uses of power. Its visual invention and willingness to reinterpret familiar material make it more than an exercise in franchise recognition. A deliberately self-contained story, it stands apart from the multi-season sagas elsewhere on the list.

  7. Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David plays a fictionalized version of himself in comic situations that grow from social rules, petty grievances, and his refusal to let an awkward moment pass. The format gives the cast room to make small misunderstandings snowball into elaborate embarrassment. Its comedy depends less on warmth than on the ruthless consistency of its point of view. HBO’s catalog describes the series through David’s comic predicaments.

  8. Sex and the City

Following Carrie Bradshaw and her friends, this comedy-drama made friendship, sex, work, and city life central subjects of a mainstream series. Its influence is clear in how television could center women’s conversations and desires, even as some of its assumptions feel tied to its era. HBO’s official synopsis identifies Carrie and her friends as the center of the show.

  9. Insecure

Issa Rae’s comedy-drama finds its voice in the awkward, funny space between who its characters hope to be and how they actually behave. Its friendships, romantic missteps, and professional uncertainty feel specific without narrowing the show’s emotional reach. It balances comedy with a clear sense of place and a confident visual identity.

  10. Barry

A hitman who tries to become an actor is the premise for a series that keeps changing the terms of its dark comedy. Bill Hader’s performance and direction help shift the tone from absurdity to suspense and tragedy without losing the character’s contradictions. That tonal control is also a risk: the series becomes bleaker as it goes, and its ending refuses easy comfort.

The Pacific - Complete HBO Series [Blu-ray][2010] [Region Free]
    • Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk has English audio and subtitles.
  11. Big Little Lies

This drama begins with a mystery and uses it to examine the private pressures beneath the polished surface of a wealthy coastal community. Its ensemble performances make the relationships and competing accounts of events as compelling as the central question. The first season has a particularly strong sense of shape; the series is best understood with that compact arc in mind.

  12. Hacks

At the heart of Hacks is a prickly creative partnership between an established comedian and a younger writer. The series finds comedy in generational conflict and workplace power while allowing both women genuine ambition and vulnerability. Its performances give the sharp exchanges a human counterweight.

  13. True Detective

This anthology series changes its cast and story with each season, so its quality and style are not uniform. Its strongest work pairs crime investigation with atmosphere, moral unease, and a sense of place that reaches beyond the puzzle itself. The format allows fresh starts, but also means the series must be judged by individual runs rather than as one continuous story.

  14. Succession

HBO describes Succession as a story of power and family surrounding an aging media mogul and his children. Its central pleasure is watching a wealthy family turn almost every relationship into a contest for control. The writing’s acid comedy is matched by a cast that can make status games both ridiculous and painful.

The Television Academy’s award record documents the series’ recognition. For a sense of its audience at the time, Warner Bros. Discovery reported in 2023 that the finale drew 2.9 million viewers and season four averaged 8.7 million viewers across episodes. Those contemporaneous company figures use different measures and should not be treated as directly comparable with older audience statistics.

  15. Game of Thrones

Based on George R. R. Martin’s book series, Game of Thrones brought sprawling political conflict, fantasy world-building, and large-scale spectacle together for a vast television audience. Its strongest seasons combine shifting alliances with a striking sense of consequence; its uneven later stretch complicates its legacy. HBO’s catalog confirms the literary source, while the Television Academy’s award record documents its recognition.

HBO reported an average gross audience of 18.4 million viewers in 2014, as covered by TIME. That is a historical, date-specific figure—not a current audience total. Readers who want to explore the source material can turn to Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

  16. Band of Brothers

This limited series follows an American paratrooper unit through the Second World War, grounding large-scale combat in the experiences of the soldiers moving through it. Its production scale serves a human story of fear, discipline, loss, and solidarity. Its finite scope helps give the narrative a clear destination.

  17. Rome

Rome turns the fall of the Roman Republic into a story of political upheaval viewed through both powerful figures and ordinary soldiers. Its crowded world and physical production design make history feel inhabited rather than diagrammed. The series ended sooner than originally envisioned, leaving its ambition more visible than its long-term consistency.

  18. Game of Thrones

Its cultural reach and technical ambition make Game of Thrones a defining HBO phenomenon, but the distance between its most assured storytelling and its less even final seasons keeps it out of the top tier here. The show remains a major achievement in ensemble casting and fantasy production, even for viewers who find its final stretch unsatisfying.

  19. The Wire

David Simon’s series examines Baltimore through institutions and the people caught within them, including law enforcement, schools, politics, the docks, and the drug trade. Rather than reducing the city to a single crime story, it builds an interconnected portrait of systems that resist easy reform. Its large cast and patient storytelling reward viewers who follow how one institution’s choices ripple into another. HBO’s catalog describes it as a David Simon-created series examining crime through civilians and law enforcement.

  20. The Sopranos

Tony Soprano’s life as a mob boss and family man gave television a new kind of antihero: dangerous, comic, needy, and difficult to understand. The series’ writing and performances make domestic scenes as revealing as its criminal plots, while its interest in therapy and self-deception keeps the character study open-ended. It is a landmark not because it offers a simple moral verdict, but because it makes contradiction the engine of its drama.

The Television Academy’s records list The Sopranos as the 2004 Outstanding Drama Series winner. In a 2024 retrospective, the Academy noted that the show premiered on January 10, 1999, to fewer than 4 million viewers. The figure gives a sense of its initial reception, not a measure of its later cultural standing.

How to read the ranking

The ordering favors series with a distinctive point of view, strong performances, and a lasting achievement across their run. A show can place highly through concentrated craft or influence even if it is not the most consistent; another may lose ground because its ending or later seasons weaken an otherwise remarkable body of work. The Television Academy’s awards records and dated audience figures offer useful context, not a universal scoreboard.
