Their rescue followed a joint search involving Colombian military personnel and Indigenous volunteers, with aircraft and search dogs also reported. No single searcher or clue tells the whole story.
What happened to the four children?
A Cessna 206 was travelling from Araracuara toward San José del Guaviare when it crashed in the Colombian Amazon on May 1, 2023. Three adults aboard died; the four children survived. Reuters reported the route, aircraft and rescue confirmation in its June 9 report.

Contemporary reports identified the children as Lesly, Soleiny, Tien Noriel and Cristin. Their ages were commonly reported as 13, 9, 4 and 11 months around the incident, but reports may refer to different points in the search, including birthdays. The Colombian Ministry of Transport named the missing children in a May 17, 2023 update.
How the search unfolded
May 1: the crash
The children were missing in dense rainforest after the aircraft went down. The searchers faced difficult terrain and a wide area to cover.

May 17: hope remained
Colombia’s Ministry of Transport publicly identified the four children as missing and said there was still hope of finding them alive.
May and June: a combined effort
Colombian military personnel and Indigenous volunteers took part in the search. Reports also describe the use of search dogs and aircraft. The rescue is best understood as cooperation between these capabilities and the volunteers’ knowledge of the area, not the work of one group acting alone. A Associated Press report published June 10, 2024 recounts the search and the Indigenous volunteers’ role.

June 9: the children were found
After about 40 days missing, all four siblings were found alive on June 9, 2023. Reports describe the operation as a large-scale search combining military and Indigenous participation. News24’s June 10 report describes the 40-day search.
What is known about how they survived?
Reports about the children’s food and their mother’s final days come from relatives’ accounts, not independently established investigative findings. EFE reported a grandparent’s account that the children waited near the wreck for help before leaving it. Family members also told reporters that the children used food available after the crash and their knowledge of the rainforest.

The children’s father told ABC News Australia what the oldest child had related to family about their mother’s injuries and final days. Those details should be understood as a family-reported account rather than a separately verified reconstruction. The same ABC News Australia report from June 12, 2023 quoted Luis Acosta, coordinator of the Indigenous guard involved in the search, describing the approach as “a combination of ancestral wisdom and western wisdom… between a military technique and a traditional technique.”

The latest post-rescue update covered here is from June 2024. The Colombian child welfare agency, ICBF, told the Associated Press that the siblings were healthy and growing up under state care, with support intended to help them maintain their customs. That is a dated update, not confirmation of their circumstances in 2026.
