Contemporary accounts trace his rise from RCA’s Hertz subsidiary to senior operating roles at RCA/Ariola, then to International Video Entertainment and LIVE Entertainment. The chronology is comparatively clear; accounts of why he left RCA and how colleagues viewed his management style are not.
How José Menendez’s career began
A 1990 Los Angeles Times feature reported that Menendez grew up in Cuba and was sent to the United States at age 16. He initially lived with a cousin and later earned an athletic scholarship to Southern Illinois University. The same account described his family as socially and athletically prominent. These are details reported by the newspaper, rather than a basis for adding further biographical claims.

From Hertz to RCA/Ariola
A company biography summarized by the Los Angeles Times in 1989 said Menendez spent 14 years at RCA. It described a progression from managing a major U.S. operating division to directing worldwide operations:
| Period | Organization and role | What the account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1972–1980 | RCA’s Hertz car-rental subsidiary | Executive vice president responsible for all U.S. operations, according to the company biography reported by the Los Angeles Times. |
| 1980–1986 | RCA/Ariola | Operating roles that culminated in directing worldwide operations as chief operating officer, according to the same report. |
The roles placed Menendez in businesses with very different operations: a car-rental network and an international music company. The reported dates and responsibilities provide a firmer outline of his advancement than the available accounts provide for the circumstances of his departure.

Why Menendez left RCA remains contested
Menendez left RCA in 1986. A separate 1989 Los Angeles Times report described former RCA colleagues’ accounts of a clash in management styles after General Electric acquired RCA. The report also recounted criticisms concerning shipping practices and reserves for returns; a later feature said some executives believed Menendez’s position had been diminished before he left.
Those reports document disagreement and criticism, not a single established explanation. They do not justify treating allegations about company practices as proven wrongdoing or stating without qualification that Menendez was forced out. The length of his tenure and the roles he held are better established than a definitive account of why he departed.

IVE and LIVE: a move into home video
After leaving RCA, Menendez joined International Video Entertainment (IVE) in 1986, according to the Los Angeles Times’s contemporary account. IVE held video rights and children’s programming. It later combined with Lieberman Enterprises, a distributor of video and music software, to form LIVE Entertainment.
The newspaper credited Menendez with tightening operations, reducing inventory and shifting IVE away from reliance on lower-budget video titles. That record made him a consequential figure in another part of the entertainment business, though the account’s description of his impact should be read as contemporary reporting rather than an independent evaluation of company performance.

How colleagues described his management
Contemporary accounts present a mixed picture: some praised Menendez’s leadership and energy, while others described him as controlling or overly aggressive. Elliot Goldman, then president of RCA Records, told the Los Angeles Times on August 25, 1989: “He was very bright, very energetic. But he really kept a very tight rein on everything. I felt (that style) was not appropriate to the kind of company I wanted to build.” Goldman’s remarks are one former colleague’s assessment, not a consensus among everyone who worked with Menendez.
That tension matters to the career story. Menendez was reported as an energetic dealmaker who took on substantial operating responsibilities, but accounts of his style were not uniformly favorable. Neither praise nor criticism alone captures the full record.

What the career tells us—and what it does not—about the case
José and Kitty Menendez were killed at their Beverly Hills home in August 1989. According to the Associated Press timeline, Lyle and Erik Menendez were tried before separate juries in 1993; both juries deadlocked in January 1994. A retrial began in October 1995 with one jury. The brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in March 1996 and sentenced to life without parole in July 1996.
At trial, prosecutors argued the brothers acted for financial gain. The defense argued they acted in self-defense after years of emotional and sexual abuse by their father. Those are opposing arguments summarized in the AP timeline, not conclusions established by José Menendez’s career history. His executive success helps explain his public profile and the family’s material circumstances; it does not, on its own, establish why the killings occurred.

Netflix describes The Menendez Brothers as a documentary directed by Alejandro Hartmann, featuring new audio interviews with Lyle and Erik Menendez as well as interviews with cousin Diane Vander Molen and prosecutor Pamela Bozanich. Netflix Tudum’s description says the brothers’ interviews offer their perspective, while acknowledging that the documentary may not answer all the questions surrounding the case. That framing is Netflix’s own description of the film, and statements in it should be understood according to who is speaking.
Netflix’s page, dated August 25, 2025, lists the documentary as streaming on Netflix. Availability can change and may vary by location, so check Netflix in your region.
