Dolly Parton has said her tattoos began as a way to cover scars. Her creative director, Steve Summers, has offered a different explanation for her sleeves and gloves: she dislikes her elbows and hands. Those are separate explanations, and the available reporting does not establish that her clothes are a way to hide tattoos.
Why does Dolly Parton wear long sleeves and gloves?
Summers, Parton’s creative director, explained her sleeves in an interview with InStyle, as reported by Glamour: “People always ask why she always wears sleeves—well, she’s 73 years old, and she doesn’t like her elbows.” He gave a similar explanation for the gloves: “[They ask] ‘What’s wrong with her hands?’ She’s 73, and she doesn’t like them! It’s a normal woman thing.”
That is an attributed explanation of her personal style, not evidence that every long-sleeved outfit or glove appearance has the same motive. The reporting does not establish that she wears them principally to conceal tattoos.
Why did Dolly Parton get tattoos?
Parton has said the tattoos started as a way to cover scars. In a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair, quoted by Prevention, she explained that she tends to form keloid scar tissue, and that scars on her fair skin can retain a purple tinge. She said the tattoos she had were pastel and meant to cover scars, “not to make some big, bold statement.”

In comments to People in 2020, also quoted by Prevention, she described them as “pretty” and “artful,” saying they usually started out to cover a scar rather than make a statement. Her explanation for the tattoos is therefore distinct from Summers’s explanation for her clothing.
Does Dolly Parton have full tattoo sleeves?
Parton has acknowledged having tattoos, but reports of extensive full sleeves or snake tattoos should be treated as rumors, not established facts. The Los Angeles Times addressed the speculation about a full arm of tattoos and reported her comments about scar-covering designs. Parton has described small, pastel tattoos, including motifs such as ribbons, bows, butterflies, an angel, and a beehive over an indentation left by a feeding tube.

What about the hand-surgery explanation?
One account suggests gloves conceal a scar from corrective hand surgery, but it is unverified hearsay. In the reporting, fan-site owner Duane Gordon relayed the explanation and said he had not heard it directly from Parton or her management. It should not be presented as her confirmed reason for wearing gloves, particularly when Summers has publicly described her dislike of her hands.
