A retired boxer gets one last opportunity to fight for a title, but first he has six days to make weight. The film’s official listing describes it as a thriller and names Orlando Bloom as Boxer, Caitríona Balfe as Caitlin and John Turturro as Boz. The premise puts the pressure of the weigh-in—not a long run of training and bouts—at the center of the story. Paramount Global Content’s listing gives a September 5, 2025 premiere and a 90-minute runtime.
Runtime information differs by listing: RogerEbert.com’s 2025 review identifies the film as 99 minutes and R-rated. Check the runtime attached to the specific version you plan to watch rather than assuming the two listings agree. The Guardian’s review was published September 6, 2024, in the context of the film’s TIFF presentation; that festival review date is earlier than the later premiere date on the studio page. Is The Cut a boxing movie or a psychological thriller?
It uses the setup of a boxing comeback, but the six-day cut shifts the emphasis toward bodily control, obsession and mental destabilization. The Guardian describes the cutting-weight premise as increasingly lurid and questions how deeply the film explores its psychology. RogerEbert.com likewise sees it moving away from a standard boxing story toward body horror. Is The Cut worth watching?
Consider it if you want a boxing story that rejects a reassuring comeback arc and are comfortable with a visceral, psychologically troubling approach. It is a less natural fit if you are looking for an inspirational sports drama built around competition, training and triumph. The central question is whether the film’s extremity deepens its portrait of pressure and self-destruction or overwhelms the people at its center—a matter of taste reflected in the split emphasis of the reviews.

How intense is The Cut?
The available content guidance flags self-harm and childhood-trauma themes. The Guardian also discusses eating-disorder behavior and disturbing imagery. Common Sense Media’s guide offers a content-focused overview. This is not a film to treat as practical guidance on making weight: its subject is dangerous bodily pressure, presented as part of a disturbing drama.
