Spoilers for season 1, episode 10, “Green Queen.” Asher wakes up stuck to the ceiling, then rises into the sky after firefighters cut him free from a tree. The finale shows what happens to him physically, but it never confirms why it happens or what ultimately becomes of him. A curse is one possible explanation—not a definitive answer.
What happens to Asher in the finale?
“Green Queen,” the season 1 finale, jumps ahead nine months. Whitney and Asher have completed the first season of their home-renovation show, now called Green Queen, and appear on The Rachael Ray Show to promote it. Whitney is pregnant and close to giving birth; the couple has also installed a climate-controlled room for their baby in their passive home. Their lives seem provisionally settled before the impossible event begins. GQ’s finale framing places this domestic setup against the abrupt shift to something cosmic.

Asher wakes on the ceiling of the couple’s home. He and Whitney try to work out what could be happening, including whether the house’s pressure is involved. Outside, Asher clings to a tree while Whitney is taken to the hospital. Firefighters cut the branch, and Asher shoots upward into the sky. The episode gives viewers the event, but no scientific account of it. Den of Geek’s recap describes the sequence; its suggestion that Asher presumably freezes in space is an inference, not an outcome shown onscreen.
Was Asher really cursed?
The episode does not establish that Nala’s curse caused Asher to rise. Because the series has built tension around Nala’s curse and the characters’ fear of it, a supernatural cause is a plausible reading. But plausibility is not confirmation: the finale does not identify a mechanism, and the available creator comments do not supply one either. Den of Geek discusses the curse interpretation while also cautioning against treating it as a settled, literal answer.

It helps to separate what the episode shows from what viewers infer:
- Shown: Asher is stuck to the ceiling, rises outdoors, and is released into the sky when firefighters cut the branch.
- Possible plot explanation: Nala’s curse may be involved, but the finale does not confirm this.
- Not shown: A definitive physical cause or a confirmed account of Asher’s fate after he disappears into the sky.
Does Asher die?
The scene strongly suggests a potentially lethal fate: Asher is propelled upward and the episode offers no rescue or return. But it does not show his death, nor does it state what happens to him afterward. Den of Geek’s suggestion that he presumably freezes in space is an interpretation of the sequence, not an explicit confirmation. The most accurate answer is that the finale leaves his physical aftermath unresolved.

What does Asher floating away mean?
One critical interpretation connects Asher’s weightlessness to his fear that he is nothing without Whitney—that he will disappear if she no longer loves him. That reading turns the impossible ascent into a physical image of emotional insecurity, rather than a puzzle with a confirmed supernatural solution. Den of Geek advances this thematic reading; it is analysis, not a meaning confirmed by the creators.
The finale’s sudden jump from domestic pressures to a cosmic-scale image is part of its effect. The broader series is concerned with the distance between self-image and behavior, marriage, reality television, gentrification, and racial and class guilt. The Associated Press describes those as central concerns and quotes Emma Stone discussing the show’s mix of surrealism and groundedness. Those themes make several readings possible, but they do not prove one official explanation for Asher’s ascent. The Associated Press’s January 2024 report also quotes co-creator and actor Benny Safdie reflecting, “I want to know what it is that we actually did,” rather than giving a definitive mechanism.
