Spoilers for the ending of Squid Game Season 3. Player 222 is no longer Jun-hee by the final game: after she dies, her newborn takes her number, is forced into the competition, and wins. Gi-hun protects the infant and gives his own life so the child can survive. It is among the series’ bleakest turns because the game makes a baby a contestant—but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says the child also represents hope for the next generation.
What happens to Player 222?
Player 222 is Kim Jun-hee, who gives birth during the games after suffering a serious ankle injury. She is not in a safe condition to continue competing. After Jun-hee dies, a VIP suggests that the newborn be put into the contest. The Front Man accepts, and the infant takes over Jun-hee’s number.
That transfer is the twist: 222 remains on the roster, but the person bearing the number changes from Jun-hee to her child. Netflix’s ending explainer describes how the infant enters the final game. The number’s continuity makes the baby’s forced enrollment feel especially cold: the organizers treat a person as a replaceable place in the competition.
How does the baby win?
The infant reaches the final game among the last contestants. Gi-hun protects the child instead of surrendering it to Myung-gi. He then sacrifices himself, allowing the baby to live and win. The child’s victory is therefore inseparable from Gi-hun’s choice: he puts the infant’s survival ahead of his own.

The rules around when a round officially begins matter to how the final outcome is counted. Netflix’s explainer describes the final game’s round-start procedure and says deaths outside an official round do not count. The distinction helps explain why the story’s outcome depends not only on who is alive, but on when the game has formally begun.
Why is the twist so disturbing?
- The baby is made a contestant. The infant is not merely caught near the games; the Front Man’s decision formally puts the child into a lethal contest.
- Jun-hee’s death becomes part of the spectacle. Her child is made to continue under her number after she is gone, turning a personal loss into a game mechanic.
- Gi-hun’s act of protection has a fatal cost. The baby survives, but the system turns that rescue into the final contest’s outcome.
Calling it the show’s “darkest” twist is a judgment rather than an objective ranking. The case for that description is the combination of a mother’s death, a newborn’s forced participation, and the protagonist’s sacrifice. The ending is horrifying in what the competition makes possible, even as it leaves room for a hopeful interpretation.

Why did the baby become Player 222?
The VIPs want spectacle, and the Front Man agrees to let the infant compete. In practical terms, the child takes over Jun-hee’s number after her death. The show does not present the baby’s enrollment as a meaningful choice by the child; it is imposed by the people running the game.
Keeping the number while replacing its bearer sharpens the series’ portrayal of the contestants as units the system can move around. This is an interpretation of the plot mechanics, not a separate rule stated by Netflix.

Why did Gi-hun save the baby?
At the decisive moment, Gi-hun chooses to protect the child rather than preserve himself or hand the infant over to Myung-gi. His sacrifice gives the baby a chance to live and win. The choice also completes the season’s focus on Gi-hun’s transformation: in a world built to make people treat one another as disposable, he acts to protect someone vulnerable.
In a Netflix Tudum farewell interview, Hwang said Season 3 is “really about Gi-hun’s transformation, and how he overcomes what stands in his way.” The interview also says Hwang wanted the season to explore fundamental questions more deeply than earlier seasons. See the interview.

What did creator Hwang Dong-hyuk say the baby represents?
Hwang described the infant as a symbol of the future generation, not simply Jun-hee’s biological child. In Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer, he said: “Ultimately, the baby represents the future generation.” He added that people have “the responsibility and duty to try everything that we can in our power to leave a better world for the future generation.” Hwang also said, “The baby coming out [as] the winner was in line with the meaning of Squid Game.”
In a separate interview, TheWrap quoted Hwang saying that children in the show symbolize “any kind of hope we may have for the future as well as our will to live.” That explanation helps account for why the outcome can be both brutal and hopeful: the infant’s victory points toward a future, but does not prove that the fictional world is safe for the child.
