Thanos, Player 230 in Squid Game Season 2, is played by South Korean rapper and actor Choi Seung-hyun, better known as T.O.P. The character is a fictional, unsuccessful rapper whose cryptocurrency investment goes badly; T.O.P is a real-world rapper and singer-songwriter whose career predates the series.
Who is Thanos in Squid Game 2?
Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide identifies Thanos as Player 230. In the story, he became known after appearing on a popular rap competition show, but he has not established himself as a successful rapper. After losing money in a failed cryptocurrency investment, he enters the games.
That backstory belongs to Thanos, not to the actor. The character’s setbacks are fictional and should not be read as a description of T.O.P’s real life.
Is Thanos played by T.O.P?
Yes. Choi Seung-hyun performs as T.O.P, the stage name associated with his work as a rapper and singer-songwriter with BIGBANG. His real experience as a rapper gives him a point of connection to the role, but it does not make Thanos an autobiographical portrayal.

Choi told Netflix Tudum that he tried to make Thanos’s dialogue sound natural while avoiding a delivery that was too lighthearted or comic. That choice draws on his musical background while serving the character’s particular tone.
How T.O.P and director Hwang Dong-hyuk shaped Thanos
Choi said he and director Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the role repeatedly and experimented with its elements. The creative team settled on an eye-catching look, including purple hair and vividly painted nails, alongside a deliberately striking personality.

“I personally wanted to aim high and create a never-before-seen character,” Choi told Netflix Tudum. He also described the process this way: “We decided to be a little more bold with some parts of the character. We were experimenting with different elements.”

In a January 2025 interview with Yonhap News Agency, Choi said he gave the role serious thought because it brought him face to face with mistakes from his past. “I gave it a lot of thought before accepting the role, as the character forced me to confront the embarrassing mistakes of my past,” he said. The English quotation appears in Yonhap’s translated report; it is not presented as a Korean-language verbatim transcript.

Choi’s comments describe his decision to take on a difficult part. They do not erase the distinction between the performer and Thanos, whose personal history is written for the series.
How to watch Thanos in the series
Thanos appears in Squid Game Season 2, which Netflix lists as a seven-episode season with all episodes streaming. Netflix’s official Season 2 overview lists Choi as Thanos.
