Will’s twist is that he can turn his longstanding connection to Vecna and the Upside Down against Vecna’s forces. At the end of Episode 4, Will takes control of the Demogorgons and frees his friends. The creators describe this not as a wholly new ability, but as Will finally harnessing a connection the series has established since he was taken in Season 1.
What happens in Will’s Episode 4 twist?
At the end of Episode 4, Will uses his connection to Vecna to take control of the Demogorgons attacking his friends. Netflix’s episode explainer describes Will seizing control of the creatures and freeing the group; Noah Schnapp’s interview characterizes the moment as Will taking control of both the Demogorgons and Vecna’s mind. The scene makes Will’s connection an active force in the fight, rather than only a source of danger or distress.
That distinction matters: the episode shows Will controlling Vecna’s forces in this confrontation. It does not establish that he has the same independent power mechanism as Eleven.
How is Will connected to Vecna?
Vecna ties Will’s history to his current plan. He calls Will his first vessel, taken in 1983, and says Will showed him what was possible. Now, Vecna intends to use Will as a spy again. In the same episode, Vecna says he needs 12 children as vessels to refashion the world. Those are Vecna’s stated motives and plans, not a complete technical account of how Will’s ability works. Ross Duffer says the creators had always known Will had a connection to Vecna and the Upside Down, and wanted to explore whether he could turn that connection against the villains. The twist is therefore a payoff to an existing part of Will’s story, not an unrelated power introduced at the last moment. In an interview with Noah Schnapp, the creators also discuss how Will’s role develops in the episode.
Why does Will’s power emerge now?
The creators connect Will’s breakthrough to his inner life, not just to the mechanics of the Upside Down. Matt Duffer says the writers were interested in how Will’s power development relates to his unresolved emotions and conflicts. He describes Will becoming able to harness the power as he accepts who he is: “And once he’s able to do that, he’s able to harness these incredible powers.” This is the creators’ account of the character arc; the episode does not provide a step-by-step rulebook for the ability.

The emotional resolution also makes the twist a full-circle story beat. Will was the boy taken in Season 1, and Ross Duffer says recentering the story on him felt right: “If anyone’s going to be the key to ending Vecna, it needed to be Will.”
Does Will have the same powers as Eleven?
The scene establishes that Will can control Vecna’s forces through their connection. It does not show that his abilities operate like Eleven’s, nor do the creators’ comments establish a shared power system. The most precise reading is that Will harnesses his particular link to Vecna and the Upside Down; claims that he has become another Eleven go beyond what these sources confirm.

What does the finale say about Vecna and the Mind Flayer?
The finale does not reduce Vecna’s history with the Mind Flayer to a simple answer about who controlled whom. Ross Duffer says the writers considered whether Henry might turn against the Mind Flayer, but ultimately decided Henry was too far along and chose its side. The Duffers leave open whether young Henry chose the connection or was controlled from the beginning.
Matt Duffer says the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow explores Henry’s struggle after his connection, but is not essential viewing to understand Season 5. It offers supplementary context rather than a prerequisite for following Will’s twist. The Duffers’ finale interview discusses the ambiguity.

Where Season 5 fits in the story
Netflix’s official synopsis sets the season in a Hawkins scarred by the Rifts, with the group united in its search for Vecna, the town under military quarantine, and the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaching. That context makes Will’s central role especially fitting: the story returns to the disappearance that first bound him to the Upside Down. Netflix lists Season 5 as releasing in three volumes; availability and access can vary by location. Netflix’s Season 5 overview provides the official synopsis and release information.
