Lucasfilm said the rerelease screenings included an exclusive look at the Disney+ series The Acolyte. The announced event is over; the announcement does not establish current showtimes or ticket availability.
When did The Phantom Menace return to cinemas?
Lucasfilm announced the rerelease on March 22, 2024, with screenings beginning May 3. The film had originally arrived in cinemas on May 19, 1999. The 2024 engagement marked 25 years since that release. Lucasfilm’s announcement said tickets were then on sale through Fandango and other ticket sellers; it did not list every participating country, theater, or the run’s final date.
What was included in the anniversary screenings?
The rerelease screenings included an exclusive look at The Acolyte, the then-upcoming Disney+ series. Lucasfilm presented this as an addition to the theatrical event in its March 2024 update, rather than as a separate film screening.
Was the May 4 Skywalker Saga marathon the same event?
No. Lucasfilm announced a separate cinema event for May 4, 2024: all nine episodic films in the Skywalker Saga, screened in chronological order. It was a Star Wars Day marathon, distinct from the The Phantom Menace rerelease that began the day before. The announcement does not establish current or recurring marathon screenings. Lucasfilm’s marathon announcement describes the nine-film event.
Why was The Phantom Menace’s anniversary being celebrated?
The Phantom Menace is Episode I and the first film in the prequel trilogy. Lucasfilm’s anniversary announcement credits George Lucas as writer and director and highlights the introduction of young Anakin Skywalker, Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Padmé Amidala, Darth Sidious, and Darth Maul. Lucasfilm’s History in Objects feature, published May 15, 2024, also commemorates the film.
