Out of Darkness makes darkness part of its survival-horror premise, but its night scenes are not simply blacked-out stretches of screen. Director Andrew Cumming says fire motivated almost all the nighttime lighting, so faces and details can remain visible while the light still feels rooted in the characters’ world. Whether the restrained look is easy to read will vary with your display, room lighting and preference for darker cinematography.
What is Out of Darkness about?
Set 45,000 years ago, the film follows six people searching for shelter and a new home. When night falls, they begin to fear that a predator is hunting them. That simple setup makes darkness more than an atmospheric backdrop: it is a practical threat for people whose safety depends on finding shelter and keeping a fire alive.
Out of Darkness is a British prehistoric survival horror film directed by Andrew Cumming and written by Ruth Greenberg. The BFI lists Safia Oakley-Green, Chuku Modu and Kit Young among the cast. The film was produced in 2022 and released theatrically in the UK on 9 February 2024; Sony describes it as Cumming’s feature debut.
Are the night scenes too dark to see?
The night sequences are deliberately dim, but the lighting is motivated by the story rather than by an attempt to hide the action. Cumming told Dread Central that nighttime lighting was driven almost entirely by fire. As he put it, “If they don’t have fire, they die.” Fire is therefore both a visual source and a survival necessity for the characters.

For a sequence involving the aurora, Cumming described using “one sky panel up high.” Those comments offer a production explanation for how the film can preserve visible faces and details without making the night look brightly lit. They are not technical measurements, and the sources do not establish a universal visibility threshold or audience verdict. Ambient light in your room, display settings and personal tolerance for dark images all affect how legible the scenes feel.
What the film’s language and setting add
The characters speak a fictional prehistoric language, with English subtitles. The subtitle track is part of the viewing experience rather than an optional translation detail: you will need to read while following the characters’ movements and the limited light around them.

The BFI Player listing says the film was shot in an isolation bubble in the Scottish Highlands during the pandemic. That production context sits alongside the film’s remote setting and compact survival story, but it does not make the story a documentary or a reconstruction of a specific historical event.

Verdict: a dark look with a story reason
Out of Darkness uses low light to make the characters’ dependence on fire tangible, and Cumming’s comments explain why the night scenes can retain detail without losing their threatening atmosphere. If you prefer bright, easy-to-scan images, its restrained look may be challenging; if you value darkness that follows the logic of the setting, the visual approach is an integral part of the film’s survival horror.
