What is Mercy about?
Set in the near future, Mercy follows a detective played by Chris Pratt who is accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to persuade an AI judge, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson, that he is innocent. The judge is a system he once championed. Sony’s synopsis describes the setup as a trial; “dystopian” is a description of the film’s premise, not Sony’s wording.

The Associated Press describes it as a screen-driven investigation, with the accused examining digital evidence such as doorbell-camera footage and social media. How did the projection compare with the reported gross?
A search result for Screendollars’ first-quarter 2026 box-office preview surfaced a projected gross range of $45–50 million. The linked preview PDF could not be inspected directly, so treat that as a figure reported in the search result rather than a forecast independently confirmed from the document. Box Office Mojo lists Mercy’s worldwide gross at $54,709,856, a total above the surfaced range. The gross is the later reported result; the range is a pre-release projection. What does the opening weekend say about the film’s run?
Box Office Mojo lists the domestic opening at $10,809,178. In its January 25, 2026 opening-weekend report, the Associated Press gave an estimated North American weekend total of $11.2 million and said the film took the top domestic position. Those numbers are not identical measures: one is AP’s contemporaneous weekend estimate, while the other is Box Office Mojo’s listed domestic opening.
The AP report said a major winter storm disrupted moviegoing, with about 250 theater closures and more than 140 million Americans under winter storm warnings; AP attributed those weather figures to Comscore. Does the gross mean Mercy made a profit?
No reliable profit conclusion follows from comparing the $54.7 million worldwide gross with the $60 million production budget. The budget is not the film’s full cost: the figures here do not establish marketing expenses, distribution costs or how box-office revenue was divided between theaters and distributors. The reported gross exceeded the surfaced projection range, but that does not prove the film was profitable—or unprofitable.
How did it perform with critics and audiences?
In its January 25, 2026 report, AP described the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score as 20% fresh and its CinemaScore as B-. Those are contemporary figures reported at the time of the opening weekend, not current ratings. The review’s response to the film’s prominent countdown device was mixed: AP critic Lindsey Bahr wrote, “It’s a bold filmmaking choice to have a countdown clock on the screen for most of your movie.” Bahr’s AP review discusses the film’s approach.
