New Teen Titans #38 (1984), “Who Is Donna Troy?”, is compelling because its central mystery is personal: Robin investigates Donna’s origins, and the search becomes a story about belonging, family, and the people who help shape a life. That is the case Evan Narcisse makes in his 2017 Gizmodo essay—not a claim of universal consensus, but a persuasive explanation of why this issue can feel larger than its superhero plot.
What happens in “Who Is Donna Troy?”
Terry Long, Donna Troy’s fiancé, asks Robin—Dick Grayson—to find out who Donna’s parents were. Dick follows the question through a painstaking investigation. The mystery matters because Donna herself is unsure where she came from and where she belongs.

The case brings Dick’s own past into view: his childhood in the circus and his tutelage under Batman. Donna’s memories offer a different kind of clue. She recalls Wonder Woman rescuing her from a fire when she was a baby, and describes growing up on Paradise Island while feeling that she did not quite fit there either.
Why the detective story matters more than the action
Narcisse’s reading is that the issue’s superhero elements support its human story rather than overpower it. Robin’s investigation gives the plot momentum, but its emotional center is Donna’s search for a family history and a place to belong. Dick even visits a convicted felon in prison and relies on his reputation, not violence, to get information. The story’s danger gains weight because readers have first been drawn into Donna’s personal uncertainty.

That shift in emphasis is what makes the headline’s “barely a superhero story” a useful description, rather than a literal one. Superheroes remain present; what changes is what the story asks them to do. Their histories, identities, and relationships become the tools for examining a question that would matter even without a costumed battle: how do you make sense of where you came from?
How the opening art establishes the mood
Narcisse singles out George Pérez’s opening double-page spread as a visual signal that this is a mystery. Inked by Romeo Tanghal, colored by Adrienne Roy, and lettered by Ben Oda, the scene uses a moody, film-noir-inflected look. Dick’s trenchcoat largely conceals Robin’s identity, leaving only a glimpse of his red tunic. The image makes the familiar hero feel like a detective entering a case.

Why Narcisse calls the issue a classic
For Narcisse, the key is connection: Dick’s methodical work leads to an emotional payoff for Donna. He describes the issue as expressing affection for both its characters and its craft, alongside romantic and familial love. In his words, “New Teen Titans #38 delivers a palpable sense of love on multiple levels: love for characters, love for craft, romantic and familial love.”
He contrasts the issue with the later “Who Is Wonder Girl?” story from 1988. In Narcisse’s view, that story is less successful because it puts mythology and continuity repair ahead of human relatability. This is a critical comparison, not a comprehensive ranking of Titans comics: it identifies the qualities he values here—character intimacy, emotional development, and a detective structure over superhero spectacle.

What makes it a useful Donna Troy origin story
The issue’s appeal, in this interpretation, is not simply that it supplies information about Donna’s past. It makes the act of looking for that information matter to the characters. Dick’s investigation draws on his own history, while Donna’s memories reveal how disorienting it can be to lack a clear sense of origin. The mystery connects those experiences and gives the answer emotional significance.
That is also why the issue’s peril can land harder than a plot built around action alone. The reader has been asked to care about Donna as a person—with relationships, memories, and questions about family—before the story puts her in danger. The superhero framework remains, but character and connection are doing the work that makes it resonate.
