Spoilers for Presence throughout. The ghost is Tyler, Chloe’s brother. The final mirror image confirms his identity, and the events leading up to it show that he has been trying to protect Chloe from Ryan. Tyler’s fate after the family leaves, however, is left unresolved.
What happens at the end of Presence?
Ryan drugs Chloe’s drink, attacks her, and covers her mouth and nose with plastic wrap. During the assault, he admits that he caused the deaths of Nadia, Chloe’s friend, and another girl from school. What appeared to be overdoses were murders.

The presence rushes to wake Tyler. He reaches Chloe’s room and tackles Ryan through a second-floor window. Both boys die, while Chloe survives. As Rebekah, Chris, and Chloe prepare to leave the house, Rebekah sees Tyler in the living-room mirror. That image reveals that Tyler—not Nadia or another dead schoolgirl—was the ghost.
Why is Tyler the ghost?
The film initially points viewers toward Chloe’s grief and the dead girls from school as possible explanations for the presence. Writer David Koepp described those girls as misdirection. In retrospect, some of the ghost’s behavior fits Tyler better: it turns away during Chloe’s sexual intimacy, and after Tyler recounts a cruel prank he played at school, it goes upstairs and wrecks his room. Koepp connected that destruction to Tyler’s self-loathing. These details support the reveal, though they do not establish an explicit motive for every action the presence takes.

Koepp told TheWrap that the reveal was meant to be clear, while acknowledging that director Steven Soderbergh preferred more ambiguity. The clues invite two readings: viewers can give greater weight to Koepp’s stated intent, or to what the film leaves open; they can also distinguish what is shown directly from clues whose meaning becomes apparent only in retrospect.
Why does Rebekah see Tyler in the mirror?
The mirror is established as more than an ordinary reflection. The psychic tells the family that spirit time works differently and that a presence may be connected to an event in the past or future. TheWrap’s account of the film says the psychic also describes the mirror as connected to the space between worlds. The final reflection gives Rebekah a way to recognize Tyler.

This provides a story framework for the mirror and the haunting, not a complete set of rules about the afterlife. The psychic’s comments help explain how Tyler’s spirit can be tied to events across time, but the film does not spell out a detailed metaphysical system.
What happens to Tyler after the family leaves?
The film does not say whether Tyler remains in the house, moves on, or can reach his family. Koepp speculated that Tyler might be stuck there, but did not present that as a definitive answer. His identity is confirmed; his fate afterward is not.

How the ghost’s point of view shapes the story
Presence keeps the camera at the spirit’s point of view. Soderbergh summed up the approach in an interview with NPR: “The camera’s the ghost. It doesn’t get any simpler than that.” NPR also describes the film as remaining inside the house because the ghost cannot leave it, and reads the spirit’s movements as protective rather than purely frightening.
Soderbergh said Koepp developed the story, including an ending Soderbergh had not planned. The director told the Los Angeles Times that filming took place in New Jersey over 11 days in September 2023, as chronologically as possible. He operated a Sony A7 camera with a Ronin stabilizer that he estimated weighed about 12 pounds. Those are details of this production, not requirements for recreating its camera effect.
