Fear Street: Prom Queen has already premiered on Netflix: the film debuted on May 23, 2025. Set at a 1988 Shadyside High prom, it follows a prom queen contest that turns deadly. Netflix describes it as a standalone story, and names R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel The Prom Queen as its specific source book.

When did Fear Street: Prom Queen premiere on Netflix?

Netflix’s Tudum announcement dated May 23, 2025, says the film is now streaming, making the original “set to release in 2025” wording outdated. Its official film article gives the premiere date; availability can vary by country, so check the title in your local Netflix catalog.

Netflix’s film hub lists a runtime of 1:30:01 and an R rating. Those are Netflix catalog details, and ratings or presentation may differ by territory. Netflix’s film hub also categorizes it as horror, based on a book, nostalgic, 1980s, and a teen scream.

What is the story?

The film takes place at Shadyside High’s 1988 senior prom. Underdog Lori is caught up in a fiercely contested race for prom queen, but the competition becomes a fight for survival as candidates are killed and a masked attacker stalks the event.

Director and co-writer Matt Palmer described the setup to Netflix: “We’re back in Shadyside and the year is 1988,” with prom two days away as the contest heats up and someone begins slaughtering the candidates. He characterized the approach as a classic ’80s slasher with characters, music, dancing, and other heightened elements.

Who is in the cast?

Netflix lists the following cast members:

  • India Fowler
  • Suzanna Son
  • Fina Strazza
  • David Iacono
  • Ella Rubin
  • Chris Klein
  • Lili Taylor
  • Katherine Waterston
  • Ariana Greenblatt
  • Rebecca Ablack
  • Ilan O’Driscoll
  • Darrin Baker
  • Damian Romeo
  • Dakota Taylor
  • Eden Summer Gilmore
  • Brennan Clost
  • Cecilia Lee
  • Ryan Rosery

Matt Palmer directed and co-wrote the film with Donald McLeary. Netflix names Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson as producers, with Yvonne Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine as executive producers.

Is Fear Street: Prom Queen part of the 2021 trilogy?

It is a standalone entry, not a direct continuation that requires you to have seen the trilogy. Netflix’s first three Fear Street films—1994, 1978, and 1666—formed a story that began and concluded in 2021. Palmer says Prom Queen introduces new characters and a new story, while remaining able to intersect with the wider Shadyside world. You can watch it on its own; the trilogy provides broader franchise context, not a prerequisite for following this plot.

Is the film based on a book?

Yes. Netflix identifies R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel The Prom Queen as the specific source for the film, which Netflix describes as the first Fear Street movie drawn from a particular book. The film should be understood as based on that novel; Netflix’s account does not establish that it follows the book scene for scene.

Stine, quoted by Netflix, called the film “fever pitch horror” and said its rapid pace leaves little room for fake scares before the real ones arrive. Readers looking for the source material can look for The Prom Queen; the cited Netflix material does not specify an edition.
