The Netflix comedy A Man on the Inside, starring Ted Danson, debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s English TV List for the week of November 18, 2024. Netflix reported 6.9 million views for that week. That is a specific weekly chart result—not a claim that the series topped every Netflix category worldwide.
What is Ted Danson’s new Netflix comedy?
A Man on the Inside is a Netflix comedy created by Michael Schur and led by Danson, known for playing Sam Malone on Cheers. Netflix’s official series page describes Charles, a retired professor recruited by a private investigator to go undercover and crack a case. The listed starring cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Lilah Richcreek Estrada.

Netflix categorizes the show as a comedy and tags it as both a sitcom and crime TV. The undercover mystery gives the premise a crime-story engine, while its classification signals that it is a comedy rather than a straight procedural.
What does “No. 1” mean?
Netflix’s November 26, 2024 announcement said the series “debuted atop the English TV List with 6.9M views.” In context, that means it ranked first on Netflix’s English-language television chart for the week of November 18, 2024. The Netflix chart announcement does not establish that it was No. 1 across all Netflix titles, categories, or every measure of global viewing.

How did its weekly Netflix ranking change?
Netflix’s weekly rankings are snapshots for distinct reporting periods. The series remained on the English TV List after its debut, but its position and reported views changed:
| Netflix report period | English TV List position | Netflix-reported views |
|---|---|---|
| Week of November 18, 2024 | No. 1 | 6.9 million |
| Week of November 25, 2024 | No. 3 | 7 million |
| December 10, 2024 report | No. 7 | 3 million |
| December 17, 2024 report | No. 8 | 1.9 million |
The November 25 total is higher than the debut week’s even though the ranking is lower: the list position is relative to other titles in that week’s chart, not a running score. These are Netflix’s weekly view counts for the stated periods, not Nielsen viewing-minute totals.

What did Nielsen report about the show’s 2024 audience?
In its 2025 analysis of 2024 streaming, Nielsen ranked A Man on the Inside runner-up among new original comedy series, with 2.94 billion viewing minutes. Nielsen also reported that 62% of the show’s audience was aged 50 or older. These are Nielsen’s annual viewing-minute and audience-age measures; they are not directly interchangeable with Netflix’s weekly view counts or chart positions. Nielsen’s 2024 streaming analysis provides the year-end context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the series based on a documentary?
Not as an established adaptation. A November 2024 TIME interview with Michael Schur and Ted Danson says the series draws inspiration from The Mole Agent, a 2020 documentary set in a Chilean retirement home. That supports describing the documentary as an inspiration, not calling A Man on the Inside a documentary remake or adaptation.
