Cage returns as arms dealer Yuri Orlov, while Skarsgård plays Anton, Yuri’s son and would-be rival. The film is planned for a 2027 U.S. theatrical release, but no exact date has been announced.
What the first look shows
ScreenGeek reported on December 11, 2025, that set photos of Cage and Skarsgård had circulated online. The images were attributed to Film Crave social posts dated December 5 and 6. This is an on-set glimpse, not confirmation that a trailer or public footage premiere had taken place. ScreenGeek’s report covers those photos.

A separate, later milestone was reported on April 10, 2026: TheWrap said distributor Vertical planned to show the film’s first footage to exhibitors at CinemaCon the following week. That reported exhibitor presentation is distinct from the earlier set-photo look; it does not establish that the footage was released publicly. TheWrap’s announcement describes the planned presentation.
What is Lords of War about?
Yuri Orlov discovers he has a son, Anton. Rather than trying to undo his father’s damage, Anton wants to surpass him: he is building a mercenary force tied to U.S. conflicts in the Middle East, setting up a contest with Yuri in the business of war. Producer Philippe Rousselet described the pair’s relationship as a bitter rivalry that also involves the same woman. Beside Productions’ project page outlines the premise.

#1 Best Overall
- "First rule of gunrunning: never get shot with your own merchandise." An arms dealer (Cage) confronts the morality of his work as he is being chased by an Interpol agent (Hawke).
The film is not presented as the story of one real arms dealer. Rousselet describes Yuri as a composite character based on numerous arms dealers. That distinction matters: the sequel’s central conflict is a fictional family rivalry situated in the broader, real-world setting of arms dealing and mercenary activity.
Who is making the sequel?
Andrew Niccol, who wrote and directed the original, returns as writer and director. Cage reprises Yuri, and Skarsgård plays Anton. The announced cast also includes Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks, and Greg Tarzan Davis. Niccol and Cage produce with Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi for Vendôme Pictures; Skarsgård is an executive producer. Beside Productions lists the production details.
Rank #2
The companies involved have different roles: Beside identifies Vendôme Pictures as producer and financier, FilmNation Entertainment as international sales representative, and CAA Media Finance as handling domestic rights. Separately, TheWrap reported that Vertical acquired U.S. distribution rights. These roles should not be conflated: sales representation and production financing are not the same as a U.S. theatrical distributor.
Filming, runtime, and locations
Beside Productions lists the project’s shooting period as 2025–2026 and its runtime as 112 minutes. Production began in Belgium, with filming in Ghent, Brussels, and Wallonia, then moved to Morocco. Belgian locations doubled for places including CIA headquarters, Washington, Geneva, and Brooklyn. The Hollywood Reporter Japan reported in April 2026 that filming had completed in Morocco. Beside’s production listing and The Hollywood Reporter Japan’s report provide those details.
When will Lords of War be released?
As reported in April 2026, the film was planned for a 2027 theatrical release in the United States, with Vertical holding U.S. rights. No exact release date or territory-by-territory schedule is established by the available announcements, and a planned year can change. TheWrap reported the U.S. rights acquisition on April 10, 2026; The Hollywood Reporter Japan reported the 2027 U.S. plan on April 14, 2026. TheWrap · The Hollywood Reporter Japan
