What is Masters of the Air about?
The story follows the 100th Bomb Group, nicknamed the “Bloody Hundredth,” as its airmen fly bombing missions over Nazi Germany from southeast England. The drama depicts the dangers of high-altitude combat, including extreme cold, lack of oxygen, injury, death and the possibility of capture. Its setting also reaches a German prisoner-of-war camp.
The series is a scripted historical drama, not a documentary. Its historical source is Donald L. Miller’s nonfiction book Masters of the Air; John Orloff wrote the series. Apple’s series announcement and Amblin’s series page describe the production and its subject.

Who made the series?
Masters of the Air was executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, through Amblin Television and Playtone. The directors listed by Amblin are Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten.

It is not established as a direct sequel. Amblin provides production details on its official series page.

What historical events does it depict?
The series dramatizes the wartime experience of the 100th Bomb Group within the broader air campaign against Nazi Germany. The conditions shown—dangerous missions, exposure to cold and altitude, casualties and capture—are central to the story’s human cost. Miller’s book is nonfiction; the television adaptation is a scripted interpretation rather than a documentary account.
For wider context, TIME’s 2024 historical explainer reports, citing an Eighth Air Force source linked in its article, that the Eighth Air Force suffered 26,000 fatalities and accounted for roughly half of U.S. Army Air Forces casualties. These are figures reported by TIME, not independently verified here.
