The Foundation dates her professional beginnings in Greece to 1941–42 and identifies Tosca as her first major role. Her Italian debut came on 2 August 1947 at the Verona Arena, where she sang in La Gioconda under conductor Tullio Serafin. From there, her career expanded across major international opera houses. She opened La Scala’s 1951–52 season in I vespri siciliani; later venues included Covent Garden, Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera and the Paris Opera.
Callas’s repertoire included Norma, Tosca, La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor and Medea. The Foundation credits her with helping revive bel canto, a style that demands agility and control, while emphasizing the dramatic force of her interpretations. Her reputation was not simply a matter of celebrity: it rested on how she combined vocal technique, musical judgment and characterization.
#1 Best Overall
The Metropolitan Opera archive records 21 performances at the Met; that figure refers to that institution, not her total career performances. The archive describes her artistic distinction this way: “it is impossible to point to one with a similar combination of attributes.” This is the Met’s assessment of her singular standing, rather than a measurable ranking. Read the Metropolitan Opera’s Maria Callas retrospective.
When did Maria Callas stop performing?
Callas’s final operatic stage appearance was as Tosca at Covent Garden on 5 July 1965, according to the Callas Foundation. That marked the end of her opera-stage appearances, not an immediate end to all performance or artistic work.
Rank #2
In 1969 she appeared in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Medea. She taught masterclasses at Juilliard in 1971–72 and later toured in farewell performances with tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano in 1973–74. These later activities extended her public career beyond the opera stage.

Callas died in Paris on 16 September 1977, aged 53. The Callas Foundation identifies her final home as 36 avenue Georges-Mandel and reports that her ashes were later scattered over the Aegean Sea. Her death certificate listed a heart attack, but the precise cause remains unconfirmed: the official Callas website says no autopsy was performed before her body was cremated. The official website’s chronology distinguishes the certificate’s wording from a medically established cause.
Rank #3
That distinction is important. The documented record supports the date and place of her death and what the certificate listed; it does not establish a definitive medical explanation. There is no basis here to present her death as a solved mystery or to state a confirmed diagnosis beyond the certificate’s entry.
