Lauren O’Brien described the man at the center of her Season 8 conflict with Dave Bettenburg as someone she had been casually seeing before joining Love Is Blind. The more serious story—that they had dated for months and she stayed at his home the night before filming—was a claim Dave later said he learned was fabricated.
What Lauren said about the man she had been seeing
In a February 28, 2025 interview with Glamour, Lauren described the connection as casual. Her account does not establish that they were exclusive or in a committed relationship when she entered the pods. The sources also do not independently verify the exact private timeline or include the man’s own account.

Lauren said that after the cast returned to Minneapolis, she encountered him by the elevators in the apartment building where the cast was living. She said he also lived there, and that she was wearing her engagement ring when she saw him.
How the rumor became a conflict between Lauren and Dave
Lauren said she noticed a change in Dave after the cast got their phones back at the airport in Honduras. According to her, Dave had heard from friends and family that she had a boyfriend, but he did not initially explain what he had been told. Back in Minneapolis, she said, he raised the issue on camera and repeatedly questioned whether she had a boyfriend.

Lauren also said Dave connected her past sexual relationship to whether she was ready for marriage. “He kept kind of referencing this idea that because I had this sexual relationship with someone beforehand, that translates to me not being ready for marriage,” she told Glamour. She said she did not understand how that history reflected on her character, maturity, or readiness to marry.
What Dave later said about the claims
In a December 4, 2025 follow-up with Netflix Tudum, Dave said the man had told his friends that he and Lauren had dated for months and that she had stayed at his place the night before the pods. Dave said he later learned the claims were fabricated: “I just learned that he fabricated that whole thing.”

That is Dave’s account of what he was told and subsequently learned; the cited coverage does not independently establish the third party’s words, motive, or the precise chronology. The months-long dating and overnight claims should therefore not be treated as confirmed facts about Lauren.
Why Lauren and Dave’s engagement ended
Lauren and Dave connected in the pods, got engaged, and went to Honduras with the Season 8 cast, whose singles were based around Minneapolis. Their engagement ultimately ended, and they did not marry. The rumor and Dave’s repeated questions about Lauren’s past became part of the conflict, but the available interviews present the disagreement through each person’s account rather than a complete, independently verified timeline.

In the December 2025 Tudum retrospective, Dave said he and Lauren were texting and presenting a united front against the man who had spread the claims. He also described himself as “dead single.” That is the latest relevant status reported in these sources, not a guarantee of their relationship status after the article was published.
