The conversation traces his path from multilingual theatre to Kannada cinema, his work across parallel and commercial films, and his belief that actors must be adaptable and free of ego. It was a 50-year acting career—not 50 years in cinema: Nag’s Kannada feature debut came with Sankalpa in 1973.
What did Anant Nag say about his 50-year career?
In an interview with Archana Nathan for Scroll, published October 8, 2017, Nag reflected on a career the publication described as five years on stage and 45 in front of the camera. He had performed in plays in Konkani, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi before moving into films. The interview’s central idea is captured in his acting advice: “An actor should be like water. Ego-less. Only then can he mould his talent or fit into the skin of different characters and stories.” Read the 2017 Scroll interview.

The milestone needs a little context. Nag’s first Kannada feature was Sankalpa (also spelled “Sankalp” in the President of India’s profile) in 1973. The 2017 figure therefore counted his work in theatre as well as film. A later official profile says he marked 50 years in cinema in 2023, a distinct milestone from the interview’s 50 years of acting.
How did Nag move from theatre to cinema?
Five years on stage
Nag recalled that theatre became instinctive after he lost interest in his studies. For about five years, he performed in plays in four languages. That early experience placed him in varied theatrical traditions before he became known to film audiences.

A meeting that opened a path into film
In the early 1970s, theatre director Satyadev Dubey took Nag to meet filmmaker Shyam Benegal in Bombay. The President of India’s biographical profile also credits Y.N. Krishnamurthy, Girish Karnad and G.V. Iyer with encouraging him. Nag made his Kannada feature debut in Sankalpa in 1973; his first Hindi feature was Benegal’s Ankur.
How did he balance parallel cinema and commercial Kannada films?
Nag’s early screen career connected him with parallel or art-house cinema. He recalled that his films through Bayaludari (1976) were mostly in that tradition, and that he learned to balance it with commercial work. Rather than treating those as mutually exclusive careers, he built a place in Kannada commercial cinema while continuing to appear in Kannada and Hindi art-house films. Scroll also notes his appearances in Marathi and Malayalam films.
His collaborations with Benegal offer a useful, though not exhaustive, sample of that early path. Scroll lists six films they made together:

What does the “like water” metaphor mean?
Nag’s metaphor describes an actor who can adapt to the needs of different characters and stories without letting ego obstruct the work. Water takes the shape of its container; in Nag’s formulation, the actor’s craft should be similarly responsive. The point is not to erase skill or individuality, but to let the role and story guide how that skill is used.
The idea also fits the range of work described in the interview: theatre, art-house films and commercial cinema. A 2026 India Today report revisited Nag’s acting philosophy and mentors, but those later remarks and honors belong to a different moment than the 2017 conversation.

How broad has Nag’s career been?
The President of India’s Padma Bhushan profile describes Nag as having appeared in more than 300 films across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Marathi, and notes his work in Malgudi Days. The figure and language list are those of the official profile, not an independently audited filmography. The profile also credits him with five Karnataka State Best Actor Awards and five Filmfare Awards.
Nag’s career has extended beyond acting. The same official profile records his service as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1988 to 1994, then as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 1999 and Minister of State for Bangalore City Development. In a 2022 interview, he said his time in politics kept him away from films and made him realize how much he missed acting. He also called his Kannada-professor role in Gaalipata 2 special, in part because he had studied in Kannada medium.
How does the 2017 interview fit his later honors?
The Scroll interview documented Nag’s career as it stood in 2017; it did not discuss recognitions that came later. The President of India’s profile records his Padma Bhushan recognition and 2023 cinema jubilee. India Today reported on September 18, 2026, that Nag was recognized with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 and that the Padma Bhushan was presented in May 2025. These later milestones add context to his public career, but should not be folded into what he said in the earlier interview.
